It’s difficult to plan weekend getaways, especially if you’re an avid advocate of outdoor fun and amusement. For those located in major cities or their surrounding suburbs, the idea of finding a park or large body of water seems out of reach for a weekend, let alone a long weekend. Fortunately, outdoor activities are not out of reach for anyone who wishes to find one. Check out some of our favorites.
Paddling with Pods
Paddling with Pods is an oceanic kayaking adventure offered by Sea Quest Expeditions. They are based off of the San Juan Islands of Washington State. Kayaking is an amazing adventure in itself, but imagine doing it amongst pods of orcas, aka killer whales! The trip will take you to the orca feeding grounds where you’ll get to witness them in play.
The best time to visit is between April and October, but anytime between May and August will guarantee heaviest orca activity. Sea Quest Expeditions offers half-day, full-day, and overnight trips, so no matter where you’re traveling from you’ll be sure to find a trip to fit your time schedule.
Slickrock Bike Trail
The Slickrock Bike Trail is located in Moab, Utah. Known for it’s slickrock biking trail of just over 9.5 miles, Moab is well-loved by experienced mountain-bikers. The park provides a myriad of trails designed for beginning, intermediate, and advanced bikers alike and offers trails for both the day and weekend visitor. Go on your own, or arrange a formal bike trip through Escape Adventures. You won’t be disappointed.
Inn to Inn Hikes
Getting Inn Step is one of the most unique getaways we’ve come across in quite a while. If you love walking, you’ll enjoy hiking from town to town. Staying in small inns eliminates the need to drag around a mess of camping gear. All you have to carry is your camera and a few snacks and you’re set for a relaxing day without the burden of a heavy load.
Inn-to-inn trips are available in the Green Mountain National Forrest in Vermont, which you can arrange yourself or through a tour group called R.E.I. Adventures. You can also find similar trips along the Superior Hiking Trail between Two Harbors, Minnesota and the Canadian border.
White Water Rafting
White Water Rafting trips do not require a trek to Colorado! The Cheat River Watershed begins in the mountains of West Virginia, promising you a trip varying comfortably between relaxation and wild rapids. Another great white water rafting trip can be found in the Upper Yough, which begins in the Allegheny Plateau of Maryland. The seven-mile river drops in elevation at an average of 100-115 feet for every mile traveled.
These white water rafting trips are not ugly-stepsisters to the Colorado Rivers, boasting Class III, IV, and V rapids. As a matter of fact, the Class V Upper Yough trip is not recommended for the inexperienced or inactive participant.
Rock Climbing
Rock Climbing is quickly becoming a loved and popular past time and the Torrent Falls Resort in Kentucky offers rock climbing adventures for climbers of all levels of experience. The 50 trails contained within the resort are staffed by experience climbers ready to assist both beginners and the more advanced. The resort is also home to a European inspired “via ferrata,” an iron wall for the toughest rock climbing enthusiasts.
