For romance, history and canals, the city of Venice is about as good as it gets. The veritable “City of Water” is somewhat of a wonder. No less than 118 islands dot the Venetian Lagoon adjacent to the Adriatic Sea and comprise the city proper. With over a quarter of a million native residents, the population explodes at peak tourist time. Simply put, Venice is one of the most popular destinations in the world. In fact, if you consider the number of inhabitants versus the number of annual visitors, around 3 million people in recent years, Venice leads every other city in tourist density.
Anyone who has gone to the capital of the Veneto region of Italy knows this all too well. The crowds, especially in the main and obvious attractions, can be oppressive. However, while in some destinations this fact alone would be enough to dissuade you, in Venice consider it all part of the charm. You have little choice in the matter after all, as the secret on this great city was let out long ago. As a result, do not let a mild case of enochlophobia deny you the experience of a lifetime. Venice is that magical, that special and that unique, no matter what the cynics proclaim. A visit here is a must.
Once you arrive in Venice however, confusion can set in. The hotel concierges all point to the same attractions, which is all well and good. These landmarks do warrant at the very minimum, a photo opportunity. But what else is there to see in this land of gondolas and canals? And where to start?
Well, how about with these 20 supreme Venice attractions?

The Baroque palazzo on the Grand Canal is a public museum that boasts a peerless collection of 18th century masterworks that hail from Venice. Anyone familiar with travel in Italy knows the word “chiesa” all too well. We admit that after a while, one church, basilica, cathedral and chapel, blends into another. However, while in Venice make the effort to explore as many as you can. Treasures lurk behind the heavy and ancient doors, some of which do not draw the attention of most guidebook scribes. The Chiesa di San Zaccaria for example, with works from top to bottom, boasts two fabulous masterpieces: Bellini’s Sacra Conversazione and Tiepolo’s Flight into Egypt.
The second of many spiritual monuments in Venice is the Chiesa di San Sebastiano. The church is a defacto museum of Paolo Veronese. The famous Renaissance master left his mark all over the church interior in epic fashion. The church is home to his sarcophagus as well.

15. Ca’ d’Oro
The Gothic palace that translates as the “House of Gold” is a pristine example of opulent wealth in the glory age of the Venice. The architecture and interior decor of the mansion are beyond compare. While here, visit the Franchetti Gallery inside, home to a vast array of Byzantine art.

A former monastery for charitable brothers, the Scuola di San Girogio now serves as the best defacto museum for works by Vittore Carpaccio. Thought it can be pricey, a ride in the gondola is like a water park ride stretched out to a leisurely pace with architectural delights which looks like a giant diorama to children. On the Island of Murano there is an old Romanesque church called Santi Maria e Donato church which reputedly houses the remains of a dragon killed by St. Donato. After looking at the famous glassworks of Murano visit the church and recite this story to the kids who are held spellbound by the tale of the Christian saint slaying the dragon.
