If the first 11 roller coasters in our series weren’t enough for you, here are a few more. These coasters are some of the hottest and most exciting in the world, if not for speed and height, than for sheer engineering and excitement.
10. Hypersonic XLC

The HyperSonic XLC, in Paramount’s Kings Dominion park in Doswell, Virginia, was the very first coaster in the world to be launched with compressed air. Traveling at an incredible rate of speed, the coaster can launch from 0 to 80 miles per hour in a mere 1.8 seconds. Even more incredible is the special shock system used to build the coaster; so not only will you climb to great heights and fall at impressive speeds, but you’ll barely feel a bump along the ride!
9. Powder Keg
The Powder Keg is located in Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri. It takes only 2.8 seconds to go from 0 to 53 miles per hour – not the fastest on earth, but still incredibly exciting. This ride is fashioned to remind you of an old fashioned powder keg. It starts out with quite a bang as the track itself moves, followed by special effects, a 60 foot climb, and an exhilarating 100 foot drop!
8. Flashback
The Flashback can be found at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, California. If you’ve ever wanted to know what it is like to be in a fighter jet, Flashback is the ride for you. The rolling drops will leave you feeling as though you’re in a diving jet spin. The gravity drop and a 540 degree upwards helix would have you wondering which was up and which down. Sadly, while one of the most unique and thrilling coasters we’ve seen in a long time, this coaster was placed in storage in 2007, but is likely to reappear if the park expands again!
7. Vortex
Paramount Canada’s Wonderland in Vaught, Ontario is the home of the Vortex coaster. The coaster opened in 1991 and was amongst the first of its kind to suspend riders from below the tracks instead of having them sitting in a car on top of the track! While this coaster isn’t one of the fastest, nor home to a high drop, the thrill comes when you combine speed with a car that rocks back and forth as it flies down the track. Enjoy the view!
6. Roar
The Roar at Six Flags Marine World in California is nothing to sneeze at. As a matter of fact, it’s one of the longest and most exciting wooden coasters you’re ever going to see! There are twists, there are turns, and there are 6 reversals. Combine those with over 20 crossovers and a 200 foot long partial tunnel and you’re guaranteed a fun ride. There are so many surprises throughout the 3,400 foot track you’ll never be able to guess what’s coming up next!
5. Giant Dipper
The Giant Dipper can be found on the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk in California. The boardwalk itself is known as one of the last on the west coast, and just being able to ride the classic wooden roller coaster should be a thrill in itself. It is, after all, over 76 years old and is still operated on a daily basis. Thank goodness for safety inspections!
4. X
Great Adventure is considered a thrill park for a reason and the number of roller coasters found at the Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia prove the point. The X coaster was one of the first extreme coasters built in the park, with cars that spin on their own axis during the ride. This one is full of incredible adventures- including forward flips, raven turns, twisting flips, and more!
3. Talon
The Talon at Dorney Park in Allentown, Pennsylvania smoothly combines a series of incredible features that make this coaster one of the best in the Northeast United States. You’ll be inverted by four vertical loops, a zero-gravity roll, an immelman, and a corkscrew. The coaster ends the ride with a s-curve and a helix guaranteed to leave you screaming for more!
2. Timberland Twister
The Timberland Twister is located at The Park in the Mall of American in Bloomington, Minnesota. That’s right, folks – we said inside the park. The Timberland Twister was the first indoor roller coaster in the United States. The coaster hits a top speed of only 31 miles per hour, but it sure feels like you’re going faster than that as your car spins on the track as it carries you through the mall. Prepare for a dizzying experience!
1. Mamba
The Mamba is known as one of the scariest and deadliest snakes in Africa, so why would one be excited about riding a roller coaster named after this slithering beast? The Mamba roller coaster can be found in the Worlds of Fun Park in Kansas City, Missouri. The coaster’s first drop is 205 feet and is followed by a second drop of 185 feet. You’ll travel at speeds up to 70 miles per hour, spin through a 580 degree rotation, and hopefully come out in the end without having been bitten by the Mamba!
Amusement parks across the globe are in constant competition, with each one hoping to have the most exciting new coaster each season. Keep your eyes peeled for more incredible coasters – you never know what you’ll run into this summer!

Hey I took that photo of Mamba! How cool is that? You can see more of my photos here http://www.flickr.com/photos/inabeanpod

I love thrilling things. As always most roller-coasters are a blast.
Hey, I live in Kansas City and ride the Mamba every year, its fun but gets boring after you have been on it thousands of times, try the rockin roller coaster starring aerosmith in Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios, 0-60mph in 2 seconds, that ride is really a beast.
You had some decent coasters on here. But putting Timberline Twister as number 2 is a joke. Go to Cedar Point and then tell me you have been on some scary roller coasters.
Flashbacks been torn down it’s been down for a year or two…to bad great ride…they put it in storage.maybe the’ll bring it back one day …i really hope..it was pretty bad i wish people never complained about it..only rode it once when i was little…
