The World’s Strangest Streets

Have you ever passed by or driven down a street whose name really caught your eye? While there are certainly plenty of interesting streets out there, these ones deserve the top spot! Not only do some of them have a strange name, others have some very unique characteristics that make them stick out from other streets.

World?s Shortest Street

The shortest street in the world, called Ebenezer Place, is found in Wick, Caithness in Scotland. The Guinness Book of Records list this street, which measures only 6 foot 9 inches in length, as the shortest street in the world. Not only is it extremely short, it is also only has one address: 1 Ebenezer Place. This structure, which was originally a hotel, was built in 1883. When it was built, the owner was told to paint the name of the hotel on the shortest side of the building. It wasn?t until 1887 that Ebenezer Place was officially named a street.

The narrowest street in the world can be found in Exeter, England. This street, named Parliament street, connects Waterbeer Lane to High Streetand was built during the 14th century. The street, which is a mere 45 inches at its widest point and less than 25 inches at is narrowest, used to be referred to as Small Lane.

World?s Steepest Street

Steepest Street - Baldwin St

The steepest street in the world, Baldwin Street, can be found in New Zealand in the suburb of North East Valley. The street is also quite short, measuring on 350 meters in length. The lower reaches of the street, which are paved with asphalt, are not overly steep. The upper reaches, however, are much steeper and are surfaced with concrete so it is easier to maintain.

At its steepest point, it has a slope of 1:2.86, which means the elevation increases by 1 meter for every 2,86 meters traveled. The steepness of the street was not intentional. Rather, planners simply laid out the streets in a grid pattern without any concern for the type of terrain.

World?s Crookedest Street

Lombard Street, in San Francisco, has 8 turns in a 1/4 mile stretch making it the crookedest street in the world. It was designed this way to minimize the steep 27% grade, which most cars couldn’t climb. With the twists and turns, the grade is only 16%. Lombard Street is one way only and the speed limit is 5 mph.
