What could possibly be more entertaining than hopping in the car and jetting to your favorite weekend bed and breakfast or entertainment destination? Hopping in the car and exploring the unknown, of course! My husband and I used to jump in the car and just drive, turning down winding back roads and searching for the perfect destination. We found plenty, and the fun we had satisfied our senses of curiosity while at the same time reigniting our romance.

There are wonderfully beautiful weekend getaways scattered throughout the country. Here are just a handful of my favorites:

California Route 1

California State Route 1

Also known as the Pacific Coast Highway, the 123 mile long Route 1 to provide a breathtaking view of the cost. Watch the mountains dive into the surf, visit the gray whales at Point Lobos State Reserve, or take in the sunset at Big Sur. The highway is home to quaint restaurants and inns as well, providing a relaxing and romantic end to a weekend spent taking in the sights.

Vermont Route 100

Vermont Scenic Route 100

Vermont’s Route 100 will guide you through some of the most historic areas of Vermont. Yankee towns are home to some of the oldest covered bridges left in the area. The highway is 200 miles long and will take you from the top to the bottom of the state. Don’t forget to stop at Romance Mountain for a kiss before heading off to Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Factory for a sample of their Karamel Sutra ice cream!

Georgia’s Golden Isles

Georgia’s Golden Isles

Hidden amongst the scenic routes 17, 99, and 520, Georgia’s Golden Isles have a reputation for being one of the most romantic getaways in the country. The islands are home to the Sea Island Cloister Hotel, which has happily catered to the needs of over 37,000 newlywed couples since it opened in 1940. A trip to the village at Shellman Bluff will have you winding down a path of dirt roads to an overlook where visitors can view the beautiful Broro and Julienton rivers. The area is not for those who embrace a fast-paced lifestyle!

Beartooth Highway

Beartooth Highway

A trip down the Beartooth Highway is perfect for the more adventurous romantic couple. Located across Wyoming and Montana, the mountains rise up to well over 12,000 feet in elevation. Local hotels offer travel packages to visiting couples by advertising combination packages to include trail rides, rafting trips, and romantic dinners. The highway appropriately ends at the eastern end of Yellowstone National Park, another great get-away for lovers.

North Shore Drive

Split Rock LIghthouse on North Shore Drive

Also known as Minnesota Route 61, the North Shore Drive gently hugs the outskirts of Lake Superior. The highway is known as being a direct route from Duluth to Canada but offers so much more. The Split Rock Lighthouse is a sight to be seen, and the Superior Hiking trail is one of the safest, well-marked hiking paths across the ridge line. You’ll be hungry after all of that hiking. Don’t forget to stop off and visit Betty’s Pies, where you can indulge in a hand-made pie or pie shake!
