Searching America for the Perfect Breakfast

posted in: Guides  |  posted by: Jennifer Gregory on March 17, 2009  |  No Comments

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, right? It energizes our body and gives us the fuel we need to make it through the day ahead. There’s nothing worse than craving a spectacular breakfast only to be disappointed by a bowl of stale cereal or flavorless bacon.

Breakfast

Why, then, would we not want to scour America for the absolute best breakfast destinations? Check out some of the best places in the US to have a nice, hot breakfast.

Cereality – Santa Cruz, California

Cereal is not just cereal at Cereality. This Santa Cruz based restaurant chain combines wholesome cereals with – well – just about everything your mother would not want you to put in your bowl.

Cereality

Visitors can choose from a variety of pre-conceived creations or make their own from a buffet-style menu of choices. Start by choosing your base cereal, add your favorite candies, fruits, and toppings and then head on over to the milk-bar to top everything off. Your cereal will be served in a Chinese-style container making it easy for you to eat in or take your cereal on the go.

Loveless Caf? – Nashville, Tennessee

In Nashville Tennessee you’ll find a spectacular little nook known as the Loveless Caf?. The caf? started out small when it originally opened, but it has since graduated from a few picnic tables outside of a farmhouse to a full 75-seat dining room accompanied by a small motel.

Traditional breakfast fare at the Loveless Caf? includes the best biscuits on earth, hash brown casserole, and lots of steaming gravy. Come hungry and leave full!

Petite Abeille – New York, New York

Eggo waffles have nothing on the Belgium beauties prepared by brothers Yves and David Jadot at Petite Abeille. The New York based restaurant takes it’s inspiration from Belgium, and presents diners with two main options: the Brussels waffle or the Leige waffle.

Petite Abeille

The Leige waffle tends to be thicker and sweeter than the Brussles waffle. Your waffle will be served plain but you’ll be given a series of topping options. Whether you crave ice cream or fruit, your favorites will likely top the menu.

The Machine Shed – Urbandale, Iowa

The folks at the Machine Shed in Urbandale know two things: how important it is to have a good meal and how regimented the schedule of the average urban farmer really is. They serve early meals to accommodate the needs of the area’s most dedicated industry – farming.

The Machine Shed

Rise and shine early for a 5am breakfast of eggs benedict, cinnamon rolls, and a number of other home cooked treats. Lunch and dinner are served early as well – at 11am and 4pm. Early to bed, early to rise may be the ultimate working man’s motto, but that doesn’t mean he has to sacrifice a good breakfast!

Swingers – Santa Monica, California

Swingers Diner is the ultimate Santa Monica destination for party goers who’d prefer to have breakfast before they go home and go to bed. The diner is open from 6:30 am until 4:00am and was designed specifically to cater to the late night crowd.

The food here is spectacular. Traditional diner fare includes pancakes, omelets, and waffles as well as a host of other options. There are several plates dedicated to serving the needs of vegans and vegetarians as well!

Pancake Pantry – Nashville, Tennessee

Pancake Pantry

Who doesn’t love a good pancake? A pancake is not just a simple pancake at the Pancake Pantry. It doesn’t matter if you crave flapjacks, crepes, or a yummy blintz. There are over 23 different styles of pancake on this menu, so you’re bound to find something you enjoy.

Pancake Pantry

Alright, alright – not everyone loves pancakes. If not, you might enjoy the Pancake Pantry’s famous Blue Ribbon Hamburger, a fresh salad, or homemade soup. We, on the other hand, would like an extra side of butter with our flapjacks, please!

Murray’s Bagels – New York, New York

There’s no secret here – New York bagels are some of the best in the country. Every morning the owners get up and bake 16 different bagel flavors, each of which is served fresh daily.

Murray's Bagels

You will never find a day-old bagel special at Murray’s, either. Every morning the leftovers from the day before are taken to City Harvest and shared with the homeless. Now that’s good business.

Are you hungry now? So are we! Hopefully you live near, or will someday soon visit, one of these spectacular destinations. If not, good luck finding the perfect breakfast treat!
