Miami, Florida is one of the most sought after spring break and summer vacation destinations in the United States. The city oozes with Latin influence, has a sexy party scene, and is surrounded by miles of white sandy beaches. What more could a winter-weary traveler ask for?

The Best Time to Visit Miami

The temperatures in Miami hover in the 60’s and 70’s almost all year – through the fall, winter, and spring, anyway. Summer temperatures may reach the 90’s with humidity, but the ocean breeze will make things bearable in between thunderstorms.

A trip to Miami in the middle of the summer may not be the best choice for those looking for a stress-free vacation. Hurricane season begins on June 1st and doesn’t end until late November. Keep a close eye on the weather reports if you absolutely must visit during those times. Otherwise, you may as well just wait until late fall when the weather is more welcoming.

Exploring Miami’s Most Popular Attractions

There are dozens of incredible attractions scattered throughout Miami, some more popular and well known than others. There are, however, a few you definitely won’t want to miss during your stay.

Head on over towards Coconut Grove for a glimpse at what is known as the oldest settlement in all of South Florida. Established in 1873, this incredible community has undergone extensive evolution – spinning through a number of cultural time periods before becoming the upscale urban neighborhood it is today. While you’re there, make sure you take the time to tour the Miami Museum of Science and Planetarium or the Vizcaya Museum & Gardens.

Downtown Miami is a hotspot for both tourists and locals. On any given day you’ll find yourself surrounded by bankers and office workers on one side and Latino merchants on the other. While you’re in the district be sure to stop by the Carnival Center for the Performing Arts, Brickell Village, Little Haiti, and the Wynwood Art District!

South Beach

There are few people headed towards Miami who haven’t at least heard of South Beach (also referred to as SoBe). South Beach is a hot destination for college students and young adults looking for an artistic place to kick back, relax, or party. Your exploration of the South Beach district should include a stop by Surfside Beach, the Frieze Ice Cream Factory, Lincoln Road Mall, and the World Erotic Art Museum. Those with children should head towards the Miami Children’s Museum, also found in SoBe.

Little Havana

Little Havana was the destination for Cubans fleeing Castro towards the middle of the 20th century. Little Havana isn’t necessarily a scene for partygoers but is a genuine home for those who fled to the area years ago. You won’t find any 4-star hotels here but you will find small motels, eclectic stores, and a Spanish speaking culture ready to welcome you with open arms. Make sure you take a stroll down Cuban Memorial Boulevard, stop by the El Credito Cigar Factory, and visit Elian Gonzalez’s House while you’re there.

Miami’s Incredible Beaches

No trip to Miami would be complete without spending at least one afternoon on its white sandy beaches. With so many different districts in Miami you’ll have no trouble finding a beach in an atmosphere that suits your tastes.

Ocean Drive

Ocean Drive, in the South Beach district, sits between 5th and 15th streets and is one of the most famous beaches in the country. The 10-block long white sandy beach has different sections appropriate for different crowds. Families with children prefer to hang down towards 3rd Street while gay couples and individuals prefer to hang out on the beach at 12th Street. If you stroll the rest of the beach you’re likely to find producers shooting videos, topless women, and a myriad of entertaining people.

Surfside Beach

Surfside Beach can also be found in the South Beach and Miami Beach section of the city. This particular beach is popular amongst those familiar with French culture and is a popular winter break destination for French Canadians.

Virginia Key

Hobie Beach sits on the bay in the Virginia Key section and is named after the Hobie Cats that sail off its shores. This is a great place to kick back and relax with a picnic or tailgating party. Feel free to bring Fido, too – Hobie Beach is the only beach in Miami that welcomes dogs.

No matter where you end up in Miami you’ll find yourself surrounded by incredible people, stunning tourist opportunities, and a fantastic cultural experience. The restaurants are to die for and the local night scene is bound to bring you back to life after a day of relaxation. You’re guaranteed to have a fabulous time, whether you’re there to explore the city or to simply reconnect with yourself on the beach.
