Most of us think of touring the country or historic sites on foot or in our cars, but those who want a real idea of what history was like opt for a first-hand experience on the back of a horse. Horses allow riders to move more slowly than they would in cars while truly feeling their surroundings. Hundreds of years ago, horses were our only mode of transportation.

Lynne Holzhauser, the owner of Lynne’s Riding School in New York City, has been quoted as saying that Equitours is one of the best touring companies in the world when it comes to horseback riding. She recommends comparing schools, and paying close attention to which trips are better for beginners.

Never overestimate or underestimate your ability as a horseback rider. Even beginners should take a few lessons before they go on their trip. Your leg muscles will thank you for getting them in shape before a long ride. Acting like you have more experience than you really do could get you in trouble with your horse, or even hurt.

Tuscany provides excellent, relaxed horseback rides through the vineyards. The Maremma horses will take you though the Etruscan ruins and you won’t feel overwhelmed or exhausted by the end of your tour.

The Lusitano horses of Portugal make excellent riding companions. These powerful horses are bred in Portugal and were originally used in war. While the horse’s large stature may be intimidating, they’re friendly and are great for intermediate riders.

Wales is the home of the Welsh Cob pony, which is an excellent choice when it comes to introducing the youngest beginner to horseback riding. Adults may not get to ride, but they’ll still enjoy the atmosphere and some of the other horseback riding venues in the area. The Horse Riding Brecon Beacons is one option while the Clwyd Special Riding Centre caters to those with disabilities.

In Ireland, you’ll find yourself in Kildare with the . There are dozens of stables in the area and you’ll be free to roam the countryside when you’re not partaking in any of the other luxuries available at your nearby Kildare hotel.
