Held every year on Thanksgiving morning, the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade in New York City has turned into a major national event in the United States.

Individuals from around the country flock to the city streets in the wee hours of the morning hoping to get a great curb-side seat for three hours of balloons, bands, and , for some, 5 seconds of fame on national television.

The History behind the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

Back in the early 1920’s, many of the employees of Macy’s stores were European immigrants. These first-generation immigrants wanted to show how proud they were of their new homeland by throwing a festival similar to what they and their parents would have enjoyed in their home countries.

The first annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was held on Thanksgiving Day in 1924. The original parade included bands, live animals from the nearby zoo, colorful costumes, floats and – in a tradition that has never died – the last float carrying Santa Claus. More than 250,000 people came out to participate in and watch the parade, making it such a huge success that Macy’s promised to make it an annual event.

The parade evolved over the coming years. Soon the animals from Central Park Zoo were left in peace and were instead replaced with large inflatable versions created by the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. In 1928, Macy’s began releasing balloons at the end of the parade, offering special gifts to anyone who found and returned them after they came back down to the ground.

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade has gone on without fail every year except for the time period between 1942 and 1944 when the helium and rubber used for the parade became a scarce commodity needed for the war. The parade came back to the streets in 1945, bigger and better than ever before. The parade was regularly broadcast on the radio until, in 1948, it was shown on network television.

Preparing for the Parade

One of the most interesting parts of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade is the line of gigantic inflatable balloons that parades down the street. Preparing the balloons for the big day is no easy task and must be carefully done in time for the 9am start time. Balloons are usually inflated the day before the parade at sites surrounding the Museum of Natural History. A gigantic team of volunteers will work together with students from the Stevens Institute of Technology, where the balloons and floats are built, to get the job done.

Every year a new balloon or two is introduced to the parade. Some are brand new concepts while others are redesigned versions of previous balloons. In 2008, for example, Horton the Elephant, Buzz Lightyear, and Smurf were introduced. In 2009 you can expect to see a new Pillsbury Doughboy, a 4th edition Mickey Mouse, a 3rd edition Ronald McDonald, and a 2nd edition Spider-Man balloon – amongst all of the others, of course!

Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Entertainment

The balloons are not the only draw, of course. The Thanksgiving Day parade is littered with high school and college marching bands, many of which travel from locations around the country to participate in this special event. While most acts use prerecorded music while lip-syncing their performances, you can be guaranteed that every single marching band to stop in front of the Macy’s store on Broadway and 34th will be offering an original, live performance.

That’s not to say that the opportunity to see other musical talents isn’t appreciated. In the past, performers like Miley Cyrus, David Archuleta, Inda Menzel, Dolly Parton, the Jonas Brothers, and many others have made appearances. It is rumored that Tiffany Thornton and Keke Palmer will be performing in the 2009 parade.

Other Thanksgiving Day Parades

While it is one of the largest Thanksgiving Day parades in the country, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade certainly isn’t the only parade taking place on Thanksgiving morning. The 6abc-Ikea parade (formerly known as the Gimbels parade and then the Boscov’s Thanksgiving parade), held in Philadelphia, is one of the oldest running parades in the country. There are also major parades in Chicago Illionois, Seattle, Washington, and in several large cities.

Watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

Want to get a great seat for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade? Try to book a New York City hotel room along the parade route so that you can enjoy the floats from the comfort (and warmth of your own room). If that’s not an option you’ll want to hit the streets of New York City as early as possible to ensure you get a seat with great visibility. The closer you are to the Macy’s building the better your odds of seeing live performances (although you’ll also stand a greater chance of getting lots in the crowd). The parade starts at 9am EST.

Not ready to travel to New York City? Join the 44 million other Americans watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade from their living room couches this year. No matter where you are when you watch, this parade is bound to catapult the holiday season into full-swing, bringing warmth and joy into every household.

Most of us look at Thanksgiving as a pre-holiday – the opening event to the official holiday season and a month of running around until we’re worn out and tired.

Millions of Americans will take a long weekend to celebrate the holiday with family and friends, take an extended weekend trip, or simply start preparations for the next holiday. What about those who want to enjoy an entire week away from home, though? We’ve got you covered. Here are some of the best Thanksgiving vacation destinations for you to consider!

10. Hawaii, United States

The Hawaiian Islands are a perfect warm-weather option for anyone who wants to get away from the chilly fall or winter air. The islands, especially Big Island, are great for kids so there’s no reason to hesitate about bringing the entire family with you, either. Spend your Thanksgiving week surfing, water skiing, dancing, and enjoying all there is about Hawaiian culture.

9. Paris, France

No one said you had to stay in the country during your Thanksgiving vacation. Why not take a trip to Paris, enjoy the sights, and dine on some authentic French cuisine? It may not be a homemade turkey dinner but we’re pretty sure you won’t mind what you end up with.

8. Denver, Colorado

Want to get a sneak peak at the winter white stuff? Head to Denver, Colorado for a week of skiing, snowboarding, or simply enjoying the outdoors. Most of the area’s hottest ski resorts open for the season in November, including Copper Mountain, Aspen, and Vail. Thanksgiving is the perfect time to visit – cold enough to ski but not so cold you find yourself wishing you’d stayed indoors.

7. San Diego, California

Do you live in an area that’s already a bit chillier than you like? Consider heading towards the west coast to spend a week in sunny San Diego. While there you’ll have the chance to participate in the Thanksgiving Dixieland Jazz Festival in between trips to other local favorites like Sea World or the San Diego Zoo. This is an excellent Thanksgiving vacation destination for those of you who want to travel with the family this year, too!

6. Brussels, Belgium

Head towards the capital of Belgium for an incredible Thanksgiving week vacation you’ll never forget. The city is full of incredible cobblestone streets, historic squares, palaces, museums, and decadent restaurants. The flight from the United States is about 7 hours, giving you plenty of time to rest on the way there and back.

5. Whistler, British Colombia, Canada

Head on up towards Whistler to spend the Thanksgiving holiday snuggled up by the fire in between trips down the slopes. As the site of the 2010 Winter Olympics, Whistler is bound to be buzzing with activity but you’ll have a better chance of booking a Whistler hotel room now than you will right after the New Year. Besides, when the Olympics begin you can tell all of your friends you were just there!

4. Disney World, Florida

The gang in Disney World is always ready to celebrate and Thanksgiving is no exception. Mickey and the gang will dress as pilgrims, extend their holiday hours, serve special meals, and host a number of fun Thanksgiving-themed parades. Disney is, of course, and incredible place to spend an entire week and the costs of hotel rooms in Orlando or Disney itself may be a bit less than they will be during the Christmas rush.

3. New York City, New York

If you head towards New York you will, of course, have a chance to see the incredible Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade (a tradition since the 1920’s) but there is a lot more to see and do while you’re in the Big Apple. Visit the Central Park Zoo, stroll the city’s numerous museums, dine in a few stunning restaurants, and take in a show or two. You could easily spend an entire week exploring.

2. Chicago, Illinois

A trip to Chicago isn’t out of the question. You’ll find plenty of amazing attractions in the Windy City and the cost may even end up being a bit less than a trip to New York City. There are plenty of theaters, museums, and outdoor attractions to enjoy as well as a cool Thanksgiving Parade that doesn’t really rival New York’s but certainly gives it a run for it’s money!

1. Plymouth, Massachusetts

Why not take a trip down memory lane (albiet, not your own memory) and take a trip to Plymouth, Massachusetts during the week of Thanksgiving? While you’re there you’ll have a chance to see Plymouth Rock, the Plymouth Plantatino, and a stunning replica of the Mayflower. There are dozens of incredible historic attractions to keep you busy in Plymouth and you’ll have no trouble finding an incredible place to enjoy your Thanksgiving dinner.

You deserve a break. Take some time off from work, pack your bags, and hit the road for a week of fun, excitement, and relaxation you’ll be thankful you took!

While festivals and parties vary more from city to town, holidays tend to fall on the same dates every year. While some, like Christmas or Easter, are celebrated around the world there are others, like Thanksgiving, that are only celebrated in certain countries. So who will be celebrating what holidays this November? Let’s find out.

9. Melbourne Cup Day – Australia

Melbourne Cup Day may seem like a strange holiday but has been an annual tradition in Austrlia since 1861.The holiday marks the beginning of a major thoroughbred race in which only horses that are three years or older are allowed to race. The event is held on the first Tuesday in November each year.

8. Thanksgiving Day – United States

It’s no secret that those in the United States will be celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday this November. Always celebrated on the 4th Thursday, Thanksgiving is sometimes considered more of a harvest festival. In the past, Thanksgiving was celebrated in order to give thanks for the survival of our ancestors upon their arrival in the New World. Today, Thanksgiving is a time for giving thanks for our harvests and all that is around us.

7. Vertieres Day – Haiti

On November 18th, residents of Haiti gather to celebrate Vertieres Day. The Battle of Vertieres is particularly notable to Hatians because it was the last important battle in the Second War of Haitian Independence. On November 18, 1804, the Hatians attacked the Vertieres fort which, at the time, was held by the French. They were victorious and on January 1, 1804 Haiti was declared an independent republic.

6. Iqbal Day – Pakistan

In Pakistan, the birth of Muhammad Iqbal is considered an important holiday, usually celebrated on November 9th. Iqbal served as a role model and had a vision for a safe and independent state where the Muslims currently under British rule could live. His ideas and life work led to the inspiration for the creation of the country of Pakistan.

5. Independence Day – Poland

On November 11th in Poland you’ll find people taking off from work in celebration of Independence Day. Every country has its own but Poland, instead of celebrating Veteran’s Day with so many other countries, will spend the day celebrating the restoration of its independence in 1918 after having been controlled by Russia, Austro-Hungary, and Prussia for more than 120 years.

4. Discovery Day – Puerto Rico

November 19th marks Discovery Day in Puerto Rico. Despite what people may think about Christopher Columbus and his “discoveries” today, Puerto Ricans celebrate the day that he celebrated their island during his second trip to the “New World.”

3. St. George’s Day – Georgia

In the country of Georgia, and in any other country that considers Saint George to be a patron Saint, you’ll find celebrations of St. George’s Day. Celebrated on November 23rd, many will celebrate by building fires and blessing their houses, families, and anything else they can find with holy water. St. George’s Day may be celebrated on different days in other countries.

2. Obama Day – Kenya

Yes, believe it or not, there is a national holiday named after the President of the United States, Barack Obama. Obama Day was declared a national holiday in Kenya that will be celebrated annually, beginning this year, in order to celebrate the election of the president. The president of Kenya declared the holiday because Barack Obama’s father was from Kenya.

1. Remembrance Day – Global

All around the world, individuals stop what they are doing to celebrate Remembrance Day on November 11th. The day, also known as Poppy Day, Armstice Day, or Veterans day (depending on the country you live in), is recognized globally in order to honor those who lost their lives during World War I. It’s held on the 11th of November because the war ended on the “11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month” during the year 1918. Countries observing the holiday include Australia, Bermuda, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Canada, and the United States, amongst others.

Ready to celebrate with friends and family from around the world? Gather together, plan a dinner or party, and honor your cultures and traditions. You don’t need to be in the country of origin in order to celebrate it’s holidays!

Up and down the east coast of the United States, from South Carolina to Maine, summer is the time to hop in the car and head to a beach house for a week or four. Millions of people from Canada and throughout the United States look to the Atlantic coast between June and September to provide affordable and idyllic escapes from the hustle bustle of everyday life. Suitable for parents and children alike, or even college kids on a raucous road trip, these Atlantic beach towns prove that Florida is not the only state with a premium on vacation appeal.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

As the principal nexus point of the Grand Strand, a coastline area of the state of South Carolina popular with tourists, Myrtle Beach is a lively resort city. Home to over 300,000 people, the beach town is one of the premier vacation destinations in America, with no shortage of ways to spend your time under the summer sun.

Surfside Beach, South Carolina

In direct contrast to Myrtle Beach, Surfside Beach is a tiny community of under 5,000 people that caters to a different kind of clientele. Known as “The Family Beach”, Surfside plays the part of oceanside hidden gem quite well.

Virginia Beach, Virginia

Virginia Beach is synonymous around the world as a vacation playground, with myriad hotels and resorts built up chockablock on a beautiful and lengthy stretch of Atlantic Ocean coast. Incredibly, with just under 500,000 people, the city’s dynamic growth over recent decades now puts it atop all others in the state of Virginia in population terms.

Ocean City, Maryland

On the border of Delaware, Ocean City is a small community that welcomes scores of tourists every summer, many of whom charter boats to track down a stupendous variety of game fish.

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

Delaware may not have a global reputation as a tourist destination but people who live in Philadelphia and Wilmington certainly know all about Rehoboth Beach. In the summer months, the resident population of under 2,000 expands over tenfold.

Bethany Beach, Delaware

Within close proximity to Rehoboth Beach, Bethany Beach has a reputation as one of the “Quiet Resorts” of the state and as such, draws a large number of summer tourists to comfortable vacation homes up and down the coast.

Provincetown, Massachusetts

One of the most popular oceanside towns in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, Provincetown has been a mainstay on the summer vacation calendar for millions of East Coast vacationers since the hippie days of the 1960s. With a vibrant gay community and a notable historic district, Provincetown has a lot to offer.

Chatham, Massachusetts

Another staple for visitors to Cape Cod, Chatham has a history that dates back to the late 17th century and also rose to prominence as a hospitable and laid-back coastal retreat in the 1960s. The small community of under 7,000 people has many superb natural landmarks.

Cape May, New Jersey

With over 100,000 seasonal residents, Cape May is a rather attractive town at the point where the Delaware Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. Visitors come for the beach, sunsets, to watch whales and even tour local vineyards.

Wildwood, New Jersey

Famous as a summer vacation resort, Wildwood has been a popular escape for Eastern Seaboard urbanites for decades. Though much of the town’s Jetsons-style futurist architecture seems incredibly dated, Wildwood is still big on beach resort charm.

Ocean City, New Jersey

Perhaps more famous than the Maryland version, Ocean City, New Jersey swells with well over 100,000 tourists in the hot summer season. Known as a top-notch family beach town, Ocean City is affordable and features a great boardwalk for leisurely sunset strolls.

Ogunquit, Maine

Maine is one of the most beautiful states in all of America but for the most part, soars under the radar. With the motto “Beautiful Place by the Sea”, Ogunquit is a veritable jewel, with great seafood, a gorgeous cove and beach and a serene, casual vibe.

Long Beach

Carlsbad

Another expensive zip code worth a visit, Carlsbad is in San Diego County and has a resident population over 90,000. Small enough to qualify as sleepy but large enough to contain many terrific attractions and some great beach action.

Ventura

Ventura’s 100,000 inhabitants are surfer-mad, as the town has some of the best wave conditions for the sport in California. Other points of interest include Channel Islands National Park and the historic Majestic Ventura Theater.

Santa Monica

Synonymous with posh, oceanfront real estate, Santa Monica has a beautiful pier and a downtown core that recently underwent a successful revamp in order to attract more visitors.

Malibu

What can you say about Malibu? The word alone conjures so many iconic visions of California. Even if the reality fails to live up to the impossible hype, no Pacific Coast road trip is complete without a visit to the 33.5 km strip of superb beachfront the community inhabits.

Santa Barbara

The main city of Santa Barbara County is a magnet for tourists, who come for postcard-perfect geography, heavenly Mediterranean weather and tidy Spanish architecture.

Saint Patrick’s Day is no longer a holiday celebrated by the Irish alone. Folks from a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds take advantage of this incredible day to honor their heritages and – to be honest – drink a ton of green beer.

For this reason it’s no surprise to find that the annual Saint Patty’s Day Pub Crawl has grown to such proportions that it now includes 3 days of drinking in over 100 bars spanning over 5 miles throughout New York City. That’s a lot of green!

About the NYC “Luck of the Irish” Pub Crawl

The St. Patty’s “Luck of the Irish” Pub Crawl is entering its 11th year in 2009. The drinking officially began on Saturday the 14th and continued into Sunday the 15th of March. Drinkers took a break on Monday and had plans to wrap things up today, the 17th!

This year participants are aiming to break into the Guinness Book of World Records. Everyone who registers and purchases a ticket is contributing towards this goal.

Organized Chaos at the Pub Crawl

Despite the alcoholic theme, the annual St. Patrick’s Pub Crawl is actually a very well organized event. In order to take part, participants must first register online and purchase a ticket. Those who register online will receive an email with a link to print an e-ticket. That ticket must be printed and the participant must bring it to his or her designated registration location.

There are five registration locations throughout New York City and all are open each day. It’s important to bring your ticket with you to the correct registration location. At that point your ticket is scanned and you are given a wrist band, a cup, and map of all of the participating venues in the city.

The wrist band is important because it gives you access to every venue on the map – free of charge. If you do not have a wrist band you can still enter the premises but may be subject to cover fees or drink minimums. The cup is, obviously, for your beer.

You can purchase tickets for any of the three days or for all three days together. Imagine gaining access to over 100 bars for only $30? The map you receive at registration will have a listing of not only the participating bars but also the times they will be offering specials to pub crawlers.

Examples of specials include $1 Bud and Bud Light drafts, $2 Bud and Bud Light bottles, $3 well drinks, and $4 Jameson shots. You won’t find specials better than these any other time of the year!

Featured St. Patty’s Day Pub Crawl Venues

Every year the Pub Crawl organizers add more venues to the list of participants, but several are featured on each day of the crawl. Those waiting for St. Patrick’s Day to participate will want to visit some of these incredible NYC destinations.

Porky’s NYC is an entertaining environment but isn’t meant for those looking to relax in a quiet corner. On any given night you’ll find bar-top dancers, alcohol being consumed from fish bowls, and very active games of beer pong. A visit here guarantees fun and excitement.

Rogue, located in the Chelsea district, is a bit less intense than Porky’s. This pub is a great place to kick back with friends, watch the game on the big screen plasma television, and grab a bite to eat. The people are friendly and you won’t have to worry about ping pong balls flying into your food.

Dewey’s Flatiron opened its doors in 1996 and has grown into a classy yet fun environment for people of all ages. Visitors are encouraged to socialize with their friends, eat, and drink in the main bar area or in one of their smaller lounges and private bars. Dewey’s is a very accommodating bar and is a great place to hold a party or luncheon.

SideBar is a true urban destination for a young crowd looking to mingle in style. The bar is lit by candlelight, features several flat screen televisions, and is the perfect place to host a private party. The 2009 St. Patty’s Pub Crawl is the perfect time to visit if you’ve never been before.

These are only a few of the nearly 100 bars participating in this year’s Pub Crawl. It’s not too late to get a ticket and hit the street, even if it is already St. Patrick’s Day. How many bars can you fit into one green day? We dare you to hook up with a group of friends and attempt to find out. Just remember to drink responsibly along the way!

“Ireland has a Riviera? How? Where?” This in essence, sums up a recent conversation with a friend from Nice about the hidden gems of the Emerald Isle. Such innocent ignorance might be forgiven from a bronzed native of the C?te d’Azur, where the waters and coastal communes of the Mediterranean lure millions of sun-worshippers every year. The Italian Riviera similarly, is a terribly enchanting destination. More and more tourists too have become fond of the Turkish Riviera, a now-familiar nickname that resonates from ?e?me to dynamic Antalya.

Americans even have their own version of the Riviera in Florida, on the Emerald Coast of the Gulf of Mexico. Although the Redneck Riviera is decidedly less posh than the Mediterranean shores of Europe, the weather and fine sand of the Gulf coast is a powerful magnet for college students on a budget and retirees on a pension.

So what about the Irish Riviera? Ireland is a haven for tourists, that much is certain. But of the millions of international visitors who comb the streets of Dublin, Cork, Galway and Limerick every year pack swim trunks and sunscreen? The answer is most likely nil. Yet for almost a century, the south coast of Ireland has been a popular and affordable retreat for locals and people on vacation from all over the United Kingdom. Here are some of the major points of interest in the area known as the Irish Riviera.

Ardmore

Ardmore’s paramount claim to fame is as the first Christian settlement in all of Ireland. Established way back in 316 AD by Saint Declan, before even Saint Patrick had made a name for himself, the tiny (and we mean tiny) fishing village has won numerous accolades for town tidiness, a most-prized virtue in the United Kingdom. Of course, it’s not difficult to maintain order and cleanliness in a town of less than 500 people. Yet Ardmore’s appeal stems precisely from the seaside hamlet’s calm, serene and halycon vibe. A round tower spire and ancient monastic ruins comprise the main attractions in town.

Ballycotton

Less than an hour’s drive from Cork lies the pretty cliffside village of Ballycotton. Like the rest of the Irish Riviera, fishing is the traditional industry in town, other than tourism of course. The two do collide however, as Ballycotton is a notable hub for deep-sea anglers. The natural beauty of the area, from country backroads to the sea coast, make Ballycotton a choice escape for rest and relaxation.

Cobh

The seaport of Cobh dwarfs most other communes on the Irish Riviera, with a local population in excess of 13,000 people. For golf and a wide variety of watersports, Cobh is second to none and many flock here in summer precisely for the panoply of recreation on tap. In the same vein, superb pubs in town give one a veritable sense of Irish conviviality. A popular gateway to other points along the Irish Riviera, Cobh has the best hotels and traditional attractions for international visitors to the coast. A beautiful cathedral and colorful waterfront dominate the cityscape.

Dungarvan

In the beautiful province of Munster, Dungarvan is a lively seaside market town at the epicenter of the Irish Riviera. The town’s harbour is particularly attractive, with the remains of a castle built on the orders of King John of England in the very early 13th century and a network of fantastic shops in tow. Every May Dungarvan hosts a notable festival of traditional Irish music and culture.

Youghal

On the estuary of the River Blackwater, prized for world class trout and salmon, Youghal is one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Ireland. Mainly with natives of course, but with wide Blue Flag beaches (two, to be exact) and gorgeous natural scenery, the town of 7,000 is a gem. Thankfully spared from the wretches of overdevelopment, Youghal is one of the prettiest seaside communities in Ireland and the United Kingdom.

Check out some of the best rates on great hotels all over Ireland.

The stylish celebration promises to be a blast, but you’ll have to get your tickets well in advance to ensure your space. Consider staying the night at the Kensington Close Hotel as well. It’ll be the perfect end to a luxurious evening – and safer than trying to drive home!

Life’s A Ball – Melbourne, Australia

At the Tropical Nights New Years Eve Spectacular event you’ll be welcomed at the door with lei and a tropical cocktail just to get the party started. Party in luxury and style with a quaint crowd of only 700 people as you overlook the Yarra River.

The dress code is stylish and the theme demands colors, so put that boring black dress back in the closet. Wear comfortable shoes so that you can dance with Melbourne’s hottest bands and DJ’s, as they’re guaranteed to be playing music that crosses into all different genres. At midnight you’ll have the chance to make tons of noise with the crowd or go outside where standing on Bridge Road will enable you to watch the city’s spectacular fireworks display.

Tavern on the Green – New York City

Considered one of the hottest New Years Eve party spots in New York, Tavern on the Green will be hopping from 9:30pm on December 31st until 4am on New Years Day. Party packages vary but can include a buffet dinner, an open bar, party favors, dancing, a continental breakfast, and more. The crowds here will certainly be easier to deal with than those in Times Square.

Two DJ’s will be spinning hot tunes throughout the Tavern’s many rooms. If you’d prefer a less crowded atmosphere, simply step out into the garden where you’ll be able to spend some intimate time with your special someone while watching the spectacular fireworks display over Central Park.

Tokyo Disneyland Countdown – Tokyo, Japan

Both you and your children will love ringing in the New Year with Mickey and friends at the Tokyo Disneyland Countdown Party. Starting at 10pm on December 31st, the party will last until 2am.

The Tokyo Disneyland Countdown Party is an extremely popular event, featuring spectacular shows, an incredible parade, and an amazing fireworks display. Tickets are very difficult to obtain and need to be applied for in September through Japanese travel agencies. Those who can’t get tickets are welcome to attend preview nights held on December 28th and 29th.

If you can’t get tickets, or you simply weren’t planning on traveling to Japan, try Disney World in Orlando, Florida or even Paris, France. The gang will be celebrating there this year as well!

New Years Eve in Las Vegas – Nevada

The party in Las Vegas starts early in the day and lasts well into the wee morning hours on January 1st. With crowds rivaling New York’s Times Square, the main strip will be off limits to cars so that party goers can easily move to and fro. Alcohol is permitted on the streets on New Years Eve, but you’ll be better off bringing your own – from both a price and availability standpoint.

New Years Eve doesn’t have to be a sweat fest on the street, even in Las Vegas. Try heading on over to the Bellagio Hotel where you can ring in the New Year in style. For $325 per person you’ll receive a four course meal and a stunning champagne toast. More affordable alternatives include Diablo’s Cantina, Caramel Bar and Lounge, and Tangerine.

New Years Eve is one of the world’s most famous party nights. There aren’t many occasions when people from all over the world can say they’re partying for the same reason. Embrace the evening, let loose, and have a little fun. You’ll carry your New Years Eve memories with you for the rest of your life – make them worth reliving!

Christmas trees have been a holiday tradition for hundreds of years. Take a look at some of the most beautifully decorated trees in the country!

The decoration of the Christmas tree has been a holiday tradition for hundreds of years. It is, in fact, one of the most popular traditions each season, as families from around the world flock out to stores and tree stands to find just the right tree to decorate. Most Christmas trees are firs, but in more recent years artificial trees made from plastic or feathers have been used as well.

The Christmas tree is often decorated with a host of lights and ornaments and traditionally has an angel or a star placed upon the top branches, most often to represent those found in the Nativity story. There is a little bit of controversy surrounding the Christmas tree, as some religious cultures oppose its use and others interpret its meaning differently.

What remains the same year after year, however, is the joy found on the faces of millions each year as trees are erected in homes and public squares and lit each evening with thousands of brilliant lights. No matter where you turn you’re going to see brilliantly decorated trees, some with painstaking detail. We’ve made a collection of some of the most beautiful trees in the country and, hopefully, you’ll get to see a few of them for yourself this year!

The National Christmas Tree – Washington, DC

Every year since 1923 the United States has erected a National Christmas Tree. The tree is usually a Colorado blue spruce, standing at least 40 feet tall, and is always erected on the Ellipse, on the South side of the White House. Every state sends ornaments for the tree, which is encased in a gigantic plastic globe to protect it from the elements! This year’s official tree lighting ceremony will be held on December 4th at 5pm! There will be plenty of hotel specials this Christmas in the Washington, DC area, but you’ll need to book quickly if you want to find a hotel within reasonable distance to the attractions you wish to visit!

The White House – Washington, DC

The White House is the home of not one Christmas Tree, but many. The First Lady traditionally chooses the theme for the tree, which is then decorated by artisans from around the country.

In 2001, for example, Laura Bush chose a “Home for the Holidays” theme, and artisans created decorations that represented historic houses in each state. Trees in other rooms, such as the blue room, are decorated with colorful and meaningful mementos as well.

Rockefeller Center – New York City

Millions of locals and tourists flock to Rockefeller Center throughout the holiday season to catch a glimpse of not only the ice skaters but of the enormous and beautifully decorated tree as well. The area surrounding the tree is usually guarded by angels, nutcrackers, and a number of other astounding decorations.

The tree at Rockefeller Center is one of the most popular and most visited trees in the area. This year’s official tree lighting is scheduled to be held on December 3rd. The city of New York will be bustling with Christmas hotel specials to accommodate the holiday shows, shopping, and tourism associated with the season, so make sure you grab your space as early as possible if you plan to visit.

Disney World – Orlando, Florida

The folks at Disney work overtime each year to make sure visitors to their parks feel at home during the holiday seasons. Each park has a unique Christmas tree, decorated to correspond with the theme of not only the park but the section in which it’s located. The holiday spirit is certainly in the air every year, no matter where in Disney you go!

Daley Plaza – Chicago, Illinois

Chicago has held an annual tree lighting ceremony for years and years, and this year will be no different. Celebrating 95 years of holiday spirit, the 2008 tree lighting ceremony will take place on December 2nd at 12:30pm.

The annual ceremony features performances by the Chicago Children’s Choir and other theatrical groups before the 90 foot tall tree is illuminated!

San Francisco Tree Lightings – California

Several incredible tree lighting ceremonies take place throughout San Francisco each and every holiday season. On dates ranging from November 16th through November 29th you’ll find a myriad of events, from the Holiday Lighting Ceremony in the Hyatt Regency San Francisco lobby (an indoor 45 foot tree!), to Holiday Harmony at Pier 39, to the Lighting of the Civic Center Plaza Tree – and much more! It’s safe to say that no matter where you are in San Francisco you’re likely to find a beautiful tree to visit!

It doesn’t matter if you’re looking to spend Christmas away from home altogether or simply find a place to get away for a few days. There are tons of incredible places all over the world where you can go to celebrate the holidays this season – from winter wonderlands to warm and sunny retreats. These are some of our favorites.

New York City, New York

New York City will be buzzing with activity throughout the entire holiday season. Stop by Rockefeller Center to catch a glimpse of the enormous Christmas tree or take a trip to Broadway to catch the Rockets or one of the many other fabulous shows. There will be plenty of hotel specials this Christmas in New York City this season, but you’ll want to book early in order to guarantee your space.

La Residencia – Mallorca, Spain

Whether you love the holidays or simply want to get away from it all, this quaint village in the mountains of Spain is the perfect backdrop for a relaxing holiday. Relax by the pool, take part in a rousing game of tennis, or tour the area. No matter what you choose to do, the staff at La Residencia will make sure you feel welcome and pampered at all times.

Wildflower Inn – Lyndonville, Vermont

Only a short drive from Boston, the Wildflower Inn is the perfect place to call your home away from home this holiday season. The Christmas holiday package includes a number of incredible features that will make you feel as though you’re right at home. Amongst other incredible accommodations you’ll receive dinner on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, full breakfasts, and even a small Christmas tree you can decorate in your room.

Sea Island Resort – Georgia

The Sea Island Resort in Georgia is an incredible beachfront location where families can enjoy a great hotel special for your Christmas holiday and packages designed to make the holidays special. Your package will include a tree with keepsake ornaments, Christmas dinner for four, and a Christmas portrait. You’ll also find a number of fun activities to occupy your days, including Holiday Bingo, the Stables Christmas Party, children’s activities, and even a shopping trip for teens. Who knows – you might even see some snow!

Walt Disney Land- California

There’s always a party going on in Disney Land, but during the Christmas holiday the sight is something to behold. In the Magic Kingdom you’ll have a chance to party with the gang at Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party before heading off to watch Cinderella and Tinkerbell light the newly decorated castle. A tour through Epcot center will reveal Christmas traditions from around the globe – an experience that’s both educational and fun at the same time.

Magical Santa’s Lapland – Finland

Santa will probably be too busy to visit for long, but if you hop on a plane to Lapland you’ll be closer to Santa’s home in the Arctic Circle than you probably ever dared dream. Your children will be amazed when they see real reindeer roaming free and they’ll be tickled silly after a visit to the snowball range. The staff at The Elf School and Santa’s Control Center will be happy to show you how everything in the North Pole really works. Trips here range from 1-4 days and can be arranged through the Esprit company.

Norwegian Christmas Cruise

Both the Norwegians and their neighbors in Scandinavia have unique Christmas traditions, rich with culture and diversity. A Christmas cruise would be an incredible way to learn about different cultures while relaxing over the holiday. The best Christmas Cruise we found was offered by Norwegian Coastal Voyage Incorporated. The 12 night cruise will sandwich both Christmas and New Years traditions, including decoration making, church services at port, a Christmas Meal, a Boxing day dance, and much more!

Aspen, Colorado

We had to put at least one luxury destination on the list, and that’s just what Aspen, Colorado is. Aspen is a hot spot for ski enthusiasts, sure, but it’s more popular amongst the younger crowd who’d prefer to spend the day in the spa and the evening gazing at the stars – you know, stars like Cameron Diaz and her friends. Aspen is a hot Christmas break location, promising an incredible yet expensive ski trip and hot hotels, but its best reserved for singles and those without kids in tow.

New Orleans – Louisiana

There’s no doubt about it – the folks in New Orleans definitely know how to party. Why wait for Mardi Gras when you could take a Christmas getaway trip to the Big Easy instead? You’ll be enchanted by the carolers, entertained by the local performing artists on the streets, and satisfied by the incredible cooking demonstrations you’re sure to find all over the city. Be sure to check out the local tree lightings and home tours while you’re there as well.

We’re sure you’ll have a spectacular holiday no matter where you go to celebrate. We hope you have an enjoyable holiday season, whether you decide to embrace the festivities, escape to someplace warm, or party the night away!
