Individuals from around the country flock to the city streets in the wee hours of the morning hoping to get a great curb-side seat for three hours of balloons, bands, and , for some, 5 seconds of fame on national television.

The History behind the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

Back in the early 1920’s, many of the employees of Macy’s stores were European immigrants. These first-generation immigrants wanted to show how proud they were of their new homeland by throwing a festival similar to what they and their parents would have enjoyed in their home countries.

The first annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was held on Thanksgiving Day in 1924. The original parade included bands, live animals from the nearby zoo, colorful costumes, floats and – in a tradition that has never died – the last float carrying Santa Claus. More than 250,000 people came out to participate in and watch the parade, making it such a huge success that Macy’s promised to make it an annual event.

The parade evolved over the coming years. Soon the animals from Central Park Zoo were left in peace and were instead replaced with large inflatable versions created by the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. In 1928, Macy’s began releasing balloons at the end of the parade, offering special gifts to anyone who found and returned them after they came back down to the ground.

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade has gone on without fail every year except for the time period between 1942 and 1944 when the helium and rubber used for the parade became a scarce commodity needed for the war. The parade came back to the streets in 1945, bigger and better than ever before. The parade was regularly broadcast on the radio until, in 1948, it was shown on network television.

Preparing for the Parade

One of the most interesting parts of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade is the line of gigantic inflatable balloons that parades down the street. Preparing the balloons for the big day is no easy task and must be carefully done in time for the 9am start time. Balloons are usually inflated the day before the parade at sites surrounding the Museum of Natural History. A gigantic team of volunteers will work together with students from the Stevens Institute of Technology, where the balloons and floats are built, to get the job done.

Every year a new balloon or two is introduced to the parade. Some are brand new concepts while others are redesigned versions of previous balloons. In 2008, for example, Horton the Elephant, Buzz Lightyear, and Smurf were introduced. In 2009 you can expect to see a new Pillsbury Doughboy, a 4^th edition Mickey Mouse, a 3^rd edition Ronald McDonald, and a 2^nd edition Spider-Man balloon – amongst all of the others, of course!

Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Entertainment

The balloons are not the only draw, of course. The Thanksgiving Day parade is littered with high school and college marching bands, many of which travel from locations around the country to participate in this special event. While most acts use prerecorded music while lip-syncing their performances, you can be guaranteed that every single marching band to stop in front of the Macy’s store on Broadway and 34^th will be offering an original, live performance.

That’s not to say that the opportunity to see other musical talents isn’t appreciated. In the past, performers like Miley Cyrus, David Archuleta, Inda Menzel, Dolly Parton, the Jonas Brothers, and many others have made appearances. It is rumored that Tiffany Thornton and Keke Palmer will be performing in the 2009 parade.

Other Thanksgiving Day Parades

While it is one of the largest Thanksgiving Day parades in the country, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade certainly isn’t the only parade taking place on Thanksgiving morning. The 6abc-Ikea parade (formerly known as the Gimbels parade and then the Boscov’s Thanksgiving parade), held in Philadelphia, is one of the oldest running parades in the country. There are also major parades in Chicago Illionois, Seattle, Washington, and in several large cities.

You could easily spend an entire week exploring.

Iqbal served as a role model and had a vision for a safe and independent state where the Muslims currently under British rule could live. November 19^th marks Discovery Day in Puerto Rico. Despite what people may think about Christopher Columbus and his “discoveries” today, Puerto Ricans celebrate the day that he celebrated their island during his second trip to the “New World.”

3. St. George’s Day – Georgia

In the country of Georgia, and in any other country that considers Saint George to be a patron Saint, you’ll find celebrations of St. George’s Day. Celebrated on November 23^rd, many will celebrate by building fires and blessing their houses, families, and anything else they can find with holy water. St. George’s Day may be celebrated on different days in other countries.

Yes, believe it or not, there is a national holiday named after the President of the United States, Barack Obama. Obama Day was declared a national holiday in Kenya that will be celebrated annually, beginning this year, in order to celebrate the election of the president. The president of Kenya declared the holiday because Barack Obama’s father was from Kenya.

The day, also known as Poppy Day, Armstice Day, or Veterans day (depending on the country you live in), is recognized globally in order to honor those who lost their lives during World War I. It’s held on the 11^th of November because the war ended on the “11^th hour of the 11^th day of the 11^th month” during the year 1918. For this reason it’s no surprise to find that the annual Saint Patty’s Day Pub Crawl has grown to such proportions that it now includes 3 days of drinking in over 100 bars spanning over 5 miles throughout New York City. That’s a lot of green!

About the NYC “Luck of the Irish” Pub Crawl

The St. Patty’s “Luck of the Irish” Pub Crawl is entering its 11^th year in 2009. The drinking officially began on Saturday the 14^th and continued into Sunday the 15^th of March. Drinkers took a break on Monday and had plans to wrap things up today, the 17^th!

This year participants are aiming to break into the Guinness Book of World Records. Everyone who registers and purchases a ticket is contributing towards this goal.

Organized Chaos at the Pub Crawl

Despite the alcoholic theme, the annual St. Patrick’s Pub Crawl is actually a very well organized event. In order to take part, participants must first register online and purchase a ticket. Those who register online will receive an email with a link to print an e-ticket. That ticket must be printed and the participant must bring it to his or her designated registration location.

There are five registration locations throughout New York City and all are open each day. It’s important to bring your ticket with you to the correct registration location. At that point your ticket is scanned and you are given a wrist band, a cup, and map of all of the participating venues in the city.

The wrist band is important because it gives you access to every venue on the map – free of charge. If you do not have a wrist band you can still enter the premises but may be subject to cover fees or drink minimums. The cup is, obviously, for your beer.

You can purchase tickets for any of the three days or for all three days together. Imagine gaining access to over 100 bars for only $30? The map you receive at registration will have a listing of not only the participating bars but also the times they will be offering specials to pub crawlers.

Examples of specials include $1 Bud and Bud Light drafts, $2 Bud and Bud Light bottles, $3 well drinks, and $4 Jameson shots. You won’t find specials better than these any other time of the year!

Featured St. Patty’s Day Pub Crawl Venues

Every year the Pub Crawl organizers add more venues to the list of participants, but several are featured on each day of the crawl. Those waiting for St. Patrick’s Day to participate will want to visit some of these incredible NYC destinations.

Porky’s NYC is an entertaining environment but isn’t meant for those looking to relax in a quiet corner. On any given night you’ll find bar-top dancers, alcohol being consumed from fish bowls, and very active games of beer pong. A visit here guarantees fun and excitement.

SideBar is a true urban destination for a young crowd looking to mingle in style. The bar is lit by candlelight, features several flat screen televisions, and is the perfect place to host a private party. The 2009 St. Patty’s Pub Crawl is the perfect time to visit if you’ve never been before.

Considered one of the hottest New Years Eve party spots in New York, Tavern on the Green will be hopping from 9:30pm on December 31^st until 4am on New Years Day. Party packages vary but can include a buffet dinner, an open bar, party favors, dancing, a continental breakfast, and more. The crowds here will certainly be easier to deal with than those in Times Square.

Two DJ’s will be spinning hot tunes throughout the Tavern’s many rooms. If you’d prefer a less crowded atmosphere, simply step out into the garden where you’ll be able to spend some intimate time with your special someone while watching the spectacular fireworks display over Central Park.

Tokyo Disneyland Countdown – Tokyo, Japan

Both you and your children will love ringing in the New Year with Mickey and friends at the Tokyo Disneyland Countdown Party. Starting at 10pm on December 31^st, the party will last until 2am.

The Tokyo Disneyland Countdown Party is an extremely popular event, featuring spectacular shows, an incredible parade, and an amazing fireworks display. Tickets are very difficult to obtain and need to be applied for in September through Japanese travel agencies. Those who can’t get tickets are welcome to attend preview nights held on December 28^th and 29^th.

If you can’t get tickets, or you simply weren’t planning on traveling to Japan, try Disney World in Orlando, Florida or even Paris, France. The gang will be celebrating there this year as well!

New Years Eve in Las Vegas – Nevada

The party in Las Vegas starts early in the day and lasts well into the wee morning hours on January 1^st. With crowds rivaling New York’s Times Square, the main strip will be off limits to cars so that party goers can easily move to and fro. Alcohol is permitted on the streets on New Years Eve, but you’ll be better off bringing your own – from both a price and availability standpoint.

New Years Eve doesn’t have to be a sweat fest on the street, even in Las Vegas. Try heading on over to the Bellagio Hotel where you can ring in the New Year in style. For $325 per person you’ll receive a four course meal and a stunning champagne toast. More affordable alternatives include Diablo’s Cantina, Caramel Bar and Lounge, and Tangerine.

New Years Eve is one of the world’s most famous party nights. There aren’t many occasions when people from all over the world can say they’re partying for the same reason. The Christmas tree is often decorated with a host of lights and ornaments and traditionally has an angel or a star placed upon the top branches, most often to represent those found in the Nativity story. There is a little bit of controversy surrounding the Christmas tree, as some religious cultures oppose its use and others interpret its meaning differently.

What remains the same year after year, however, is the joy found on the faces of millions each year as trees are erected in homes and public squares and lit each evening with thousands of brilliant lights. No matter where you turn you’re going to see brilliantly decorated trees, some with painstaking detail. We’ve made a collection of some of the most beautiful trees in the country and, hopefully, you’ll get to see a few of them for yourself this year!

The National Christmas Tree – Washington, DC

Every year since 1923 the United States has erected a National Christmas Tree. The tree is usually a Colorado blue spruce, standing at least 40 feet tall, and is always erected on the Ellipse, on the South side of the White House. Every state sends ornaments for the tree, which is encased in a gigantic plastic globe to protect it from the elements! This year’s official tree lighting ceremony will be held on December 4^th at 5pm! There will be plenty of hotel specials this Christmas in the Washington, DC area, but you’ll need to book quickly if you want to find a hotel within reasonable distance to the attractions you wish to visit!

The White House – Washington, DC

The White House is the home of not one Christmas Tree, but many. The First Lady traditionally chooses the theme for the tree, which is then decorated by artisans from around the country.

In 2001, for example, Laura Bush chose a “Home for the Holidays” theme, and artisans created decorations that represented historic houses in each state. Trees in other rooms, such as the blue room, are decorated with colorful and meaningful mementos as well.

Rockefeller Center – New York City

Millions of locals and tourists flock to Rockefeller Center throughout the holiday season to catch a glimpse of not only the ice skaters but of the enormous and beautifully decorated tree as well. The area surrounding the tree is usually guarded by angels, nutcrackers, and a number of other astounding decorations.

The tree at Rockefeller Center is one of the most popular and most visited trees in the area. This year’s official tree lighting is scheduled to be held on December 3^rd. The city of New York will be bustling with Christmas hotel specials to accommodate the holiday shows, shopping, and tourism associated with the season, so make sure you grab your space as early as possible if you plan to visit.

Disney World – Orlando, Florida

The folks at Disney work overtime each year to make sure visitors to their parks feel at home during the holiday seasons. Each park has a unique Christmas tree, decorated to correspond with the theme of not only the park but the section in which it’s located. The holiday spirit is certainly in the air every year, no matter where in Disney you go!

Daley Plaza – Chicago, Illinois

Chicago has held an annual tree lighting ceremony for years and years, and this year will be no different. Celebrating 95 years of holiday spirit, the 2008 tree lighting ceremony will take place on December 2^nd at 12:30pm.

The annual ceremony features performances by the Chicago Children’s Choir and other theatrical groups before the 90 foot tall tree is illuminated!

San Francisco Tree Lightings – California

Several incredible tree lighting ceremonies take place throughout San Francisco each and every holiday season.On dates ranging from November 16^th through November 29^th you’ll find a myriad of events, from the Holiday Lighting Ceremony in the Hyatt Regency San Francisco lobby (an indoor 45 foot tree!), to Holiday Harmony at Pier 39, to the Lighting of the Civic Center Plaza Tree – and much more! It’s safe to say that no matter where you are in San Francisco you’re likely to find a beautiful tree to visit!

No matter where you go in the United States this holiday season you’re bound to find Christmas tree and light displays more colorful and brilliant than ever before. Enjoy the sights and sounds of the holiday season – it’ll be over before you know it!

New York City, New York

New York City will be buzzing with activity throughout the entire holiday season. Stop by Rockefeller Center to catch a glimpse of the enormous Christmas tree or take a trip to Broadway to catch the Rockets or one of the many other fabulous shows. There will be plenty of hotel specials this Christmas in New York City this season, but you’ll want to book early in order to guarantee your space.

La Residencia – Mallorca, Spain

Whether you love the holidays or simply want to get away from it all, this quaint village in the mountains of Spain is the perfect backdrop for a relaxing holiday. Relax by the pool, take part in a rousing game of tennis, or tour the area. No matter what you choose to do, the staff at La Residencia will make sure you feel welcome and pampered at all times.

There’s always a party going on in Disney Land, but during the Christmas holiday the sight is something to behold. In the Magic Kingdom you’ll have a chance to party with the gang at Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party before heading off to watch Cinderella and Tinkerbell light the newly decorated castle. A tour through Epcot center will reveal Christmas traditions from around the globe – an experience that’s both educational and fun at the same time.

Magical Santa’s Lapland – Finland

Santa will probably be too busy to visit for long, but if you hop on a plane to Lapland you’ll be closer to Santa’s home in the Arctic Circle than you probably ever dared dream. Your children will be amazed when they see real reindeer roaming free and they’ll be tickled silly after a visit to the snowball range. The staff at The Elf School and Santa’s Control Center will be happy to show you how everything in the North Pole really works. Trips here range from 1-4 days and can be arranged through the Esprit company.

Norwegian Christmas Cruise

Both the Norwegians and their neighbors in Scandinavia have unique Christmas traditions, rich with culture and diversity. A Christmas cruise would be an incredible way to learn about different cultures while relaxing over the holiday. The best Christmas Cruise we found was offered by Norwegian Coastal Voyage Incorporated. The 12 night cruise will sandwich both Christmas and New Years traditions, including decoration making, church services at port, a Christmas Meal, a Boxing day dance, and much more!

Aspen, Colorado

We had to put at least one luxury destination on the list, and that’s just what Aspen, Colorado is. Aspen is a hot spot for ski enthusiasts, sure, but it’s more popular amongst the younger crowd who’d prefer to spend the day in the spa and the evening gazing at the stars – you know, stars like Cameron Diaz and her friends. Aspen is a hot Christmas break location, promising an incredible yet expensive ski trip and hot hotels, but its best reserved for singles and those without kids in tow.

New Orleans – Louisiana

There’s no doubt about it – the folks in New Orleans definitely know how to party. Why wait for Mardi Gras when you could take a Christmas getaway trip to the Big Easy instead? You’ll be enchanted by the carolers, entertained by the local performing artists on the streets, and satisfied by the incredible cooking demonstrations you’re sure to find all over the city. Be sure to check out the local tree lightings and home tours while you’re there as well.
