Truth be told, most people don’t have nearly as many complaints about their vacation destinations as they do about the routes they took to get there. Air travel is, of course, one of the most complained about modes of transportation. So what can you do to relieve some of the stress associated with traveling by air?

10. Check Statistics

Check the statistics for the past flights offered by the airline you plan on using for travel. You can ask the bureau of Transportation Statistics for information regarding the number of flights that were on time, late, or early during a specific time period. If a regular flight, like one from NYC to Florida, is regularly leaving or arriving late you may want to choose a better airline.

9. Learn about Timing

The advantage to flying early in the day is that there usually aren’t a bunch of already-delayed flights in front of yours waiting to leave the tarmac. Earlier flights tend to leave on time. You should also time your arrival to ensure you’re one of the first people to board your airplane. If a flight is overbooked, the ones who were seated first get to stay and the ones still standing are left behind.

8. Learn Patience

Arrive at the airport knowing that you’re going to spend a lot of time waiting in line at the security checkpoints. Prepare for a long wait. Wear comfortable shoes. Load your favorite tunes onto your iPod. The more prepared you are to wait the happier you’ll be if the line actually moves faster than anticipated.

7. Opt for Smaller Airlines

The larger airlines with the most flights are the ones charging the highest fares and for some reason can’t seem to get you from point A to point B without a layover of some sort. The smaller airlines, like Cathay Pacific, often offer lower prices with less frequent stops. It sometimes pays to trust a lesser-known airline.

6. Pack Sparingly

The cost of checking extra bags, or bags that are overweight, is incredibly expensive. It’s not just expensive – it’s excessive. Additional bags can cost you anywhere from $15 to $100 per bag, more (much more) if they’re too large or weigh too much. Pack as little as possible and make sure your bags meet your airline’s guidelines before you leave the house.

5. Call the Airline

Did your flight get canceled or delayed? Remember, you are probably only one of more than 100 people who had plans to board that same flight. Instead of getting in line at the airline counter, find a quiet place to sit and give the airline a call. You’ll have an easier time grabbing the attention of a booking agent on the phone and will be able to easily reschedule your flight with very little hassle. Just make sure you have your airline’s booking phone number with you, either written down or programmed into your phone.

4. Careful Seat Selection

Every airline website publishes information about the type of aircraft it will use for each flight. Look at this information and study it carefully before choosing the seat you’d like to have. Take this information and then go to seatguru.com for information on how the airline itself lays out the plane (they do make modifications). You’ll know which seats have more legroom, which ones recline (and don’t), and which are in the noisiest areas of the plane.

3. Make Yourself at Home

There’s no reason for you to be uncomfortable on your flight, regardless of what section you end up sitting in. All you need to do is add a couple of small items to your carry-on bag and you’ll have an enjoyable flight. A set of simple headphones, an eye mask, and a lightweight blanket will go a long way in ensuring your comfort during your long flight.

2. Negotiate Flight Bumps

Sometimes airlines will overbook and ask people to voluntarily be bumped to another flight. Never let an airline take advantage of you. Make sure they’re going to pay for a hotel room if you will be stuck overnight, pay for food, or at least give you access to their private lounge. Don’t jump to accept a free travel voucher, either. Most travel vouchers have very limiting restrictions. Ask for vouchers with dollar values instead.

1. Ship Your Bags

Worried about losing your luggage? Why not pack it up and mail it ahead of time. You can have it shipped directly to your hotel via UPS or FedEx Ground or you can use a specialized service like Luggage Free or Sports Express. The costs to use these services can add up quickly but some, like FedEx Ground, are much less expensive than paying the airline’s extra charges.

Making a few simple adjustments before you even arrive at the airport can make a huge difference in the way you feel by the end of your flight. Relax and enjoy the time you spend traveling – you’ll need to rest up before your real adventures begin.

While we’d like to believe that scientists and researchers know all there is to know about animals and wildlife, the truth is that it doesn’t really matter how much we know about the myriad of animal species on the planet. Unless they’re holed up in zoos, most animals are determined to keep control of their habitats and that means eradicating anything that stands in their way – even if what stands in the way happens to be a human being. The following are 10 animals who wouldn’t think twice before turning you into a meal.

10. Jaguars

Usually found in the western hemisphere, the rather large and insanely quick jaguar would prefer you stay out of his path. Truth be told, jaguar attacks against humans are rare but if you should happen to enter his habitat, perhaps while touring the Peruvian Amazon, you might want to refrain from doing anything stupid or provocative. The jaguar’s jaws, claws, and teeth will tear you to shreds in mere seconds.

9. Saltwater Crocodiles

In Australia, saltwater crocodiles, otherwise known as “salties” are one of the most dangerous animals. Most victims are snatched while swimming in mucky water but they are occasionally attacked while standing on water banks and sometimes while standing or working on boat ramps, too. If you want to visit these beasts you should head towards the Kakadu National Park where you can see them lining the shores of the Adelaide River.

8. Great White Sharks

Usually found off the shores of Southern Africa, great white sharks have been spotted off of the shores of California as well. Despite the terror they strike into the hearts of so many, great white sharks are incredible to see in person. If you’re brave enough you’ll want to schedule a shark diving expedition, complete with protective cages, to get a closer look.

7. Lions

Lions appear tame in zoo cages but in the wild, like in their natural Tanzanian habitat, they’re willing to do whatever it takes to survive. Believe it or not, deaths caused by lion attack are not declining but are rising. Researchers believe this is because of human encroachment on their natural habitat combined with a decrease in hunting (resulting in a higher birth rate). The lions are hungry!

6. Cobras

Cobras are usually found in Asia and Africa, in tropical climates, and are very frequently found in Southeast Asia. Able to grow up to 18 feet long, cobras are considered to be the largest venomous snake in the world and are responsible for killing at least 200-300 people every year. Cobras tend to migrate towards heavily populated areas because they know they’ll find ample food supplies there.

5. Polar Bears

In the Manitoba province of Canada you’ll find a huge population of polar bears. While they’re often depicted in cartoons as friendly, fuzzy beasts, polar bears attack most often during the fall months when they are preparing for hibernation. Don’t attempt to approach a polar bear in person. Stay in your car or consider camping in a portable lodge so that you can watch the bears as they look in at you!

4. Hippopotamus

Yup – we said it. The usually friendly looking hippopotamus is more than willing to eat you if you get in his way. Despite the way they are portrayed in comics and cartoons, hippos are actually aggressive and irritable. While they usually eat plants, a hippopotamus will not think twice about attacking a large mammal, especially if it stands between him and his watering hole. In areas like Zambia, hippos are responsible for approximately 150 human deaths each year.

3. Bengal Tigers

Considered some of the most beautiful cats in the world, Bengal tigers are also incredibly dangerous. Bengal tigers can be found in India, Nepal, and Bangladesh but are becoming rarer due to human encroachment and poaching habits. All in all, you’d best keep your eyes peeled, especially in the Ranthambhore Bagh region. You’ll want to spot the Bengal before he spots you.

2. Wolves

We all joke about wolves being scary, especially after seeing them depicted in movies and in books. Truth be told, though, wolves are skilled predators and will do whatever it takes to get a meal. The most dangerous wolves exist in Siberia, especially near Russia’s Lake Baikal.

1. Komodo Dragons

These mythical looking creatures, found predominantly in Indonesia, are the size of alligators and can smell their prey from distances up to two miles away. Komodo dragons hunt in packs and if you are lucky enough to survive an attack by his razor sharp teeth you’ll probably die of infection caused by the myriad of infectious, incurable bacteria he leaves behind. Komodo dragons haven’t killed too many people – mostly because the three islands where they’re usually found aren’t inhabited by humans.

Want to see some of these incredible beasts? We recommend skipping the nature hike and visiting some of the 10 Best Zoos in the World instead. Better safe than sorry.

There’s nothing worse than sitting in the coach section of an airplane after walking past those gigantic, comfortable looking seats in first class. While flying coach isn’t anyone’s favorite way to travel, there are a few things you can do to make your experience a little more enjoyable.

10. Choose a Great Airline

Look for airlines that don’t treat coach passengers as though they’re third-rate. JetBlue, for example, offers coach seats with 38 inches of legroom as opposed to the standard 31 inches most airlines offer. Southwest and Virgin Atlantic offer spacious seating arrangements and even offer snacks and pillows at no additional cost.

9. Bring Snacks

Let’s face it. Airline food today really stinks. Pack a few snacks, sandwiches, or even tea bags into your carry on and you’re guaranteed to have at least something appetizing for the trip. If you bring an empty water bottle you can fill it at a water fountain after you’ve gone through security. You can purchase beverages at the airport newsstands, too. They may be more expensive but they won’t be as expensive (or as small) as the things you get on the plane.

8. Select Great Seats

Visit websites like SeatExpert.com to get an idea of the seat layout on the aircraft you plan to fly on. You may find that seats in exit-rows have more leg space. On the other hand, seats right in front of an exit row won’t recline all the way because they become a hazard in the event of an emergency. Request specific placement if you wish but don’t be surprised if your airline tries to tack on an extra charge.

7. Pack Entertainment

Never rely on anyone but yourself to keep you entertained. What happens if the in-flight movie really stinks or the stuff in the SkyMall magazine is outdated? Boring. Bring books, your iPod, a magazine, or even a small game to keep you and your traveling companions occupied.

6. Check In Early

Most airlines allow you to pick your seats when you book your flight but when you check in you’ll have another chance to make a change. You can check in about 24 hours before your flight’s scheduled departure time and at that time pick better seats. If you fly on Southwest, where seats aren’t assigned, checking in early will help you find your way to group A, or the group that gets to board first.

5. Carry Headphones

If noise is a concern, consider throwing a pair of high-quality headphones into your travel bag. Bose makes great quiet headphones but you don’t have to go top of the line if you don’t want to. Even the small low-tech earplugs, the kind you can get for $5 at WalMart, will work wonders when it comes to blocking out sound. Besides, it’s better to bring your own headphones for movies – the airline will charge you extra if you have to rent from them.

4. Pay for a Comfortable Location

A few airlines are charging extra for seats in more comfortable sections of the plane (still in coach – sorry). US Airways and Air Tran, for example, will let you reserve a row seat while airlines like JetBlue and United will let you reserve seats at the front of the plane because they have just a few inches of extra leg room.

3. Be Polite

Traveling can be stressful but there’s no reason to be rude or grumpy. The nicer you are, the nicer others will treat you – including your flight attendants and anyone you may need help from later on. Keep a positive mindset and your flight will go that much smoother.

2. Utilize Frequent Flyer Miles

Sometimes those Frequent Flyer Miles are good for things other than just airline ticket purchase. After your affiliate yourself with an airline you’ll find you may receive special perks. These include exit row seats without an extra charge, special check in privileges, and first seating on the plane.

1. Sleep

The best way to be as comfortable as your counterparts in first class is to simply shut your eyes and get a little bit of sleep. Pack an eye pillow, small shawl, and even an eye mask if you’re going to be on a long flight. A well rested traveler is a happier traveler.

You don’t have to spend a ton of cash to fly in first class, especially if you aren’t traveling far. Making a few changes to the way you book your flights and carrying a few extra items in your carry-on luggage will ensure you’re as comfortable as possible from takeoff to landing.

There’s nothing better than a luxurious vacation with a group of great friends. Sadly, not every hotel or resort in the world is ready to accommodate a large group of people traveling together. There are, however, a few hotels throughout North America where you’ll find special accommodations and deals. Check out a few of the most popular:

9. Hotel Healdsburg – Sonoma County, California

If you plan to book at least five rooms for at least two nights during the week, the hotel rates at the astounding Hotel Healdsburg drop almost $100 per room per night. Book directly through the sales department and your group may even land some extra special VIP suite upgrades, passes to the wine tasting room, and spa credit, too!

8. Canyon Ranch – Miami Beach, Florida

Canyon Ranch is known for being an expensive getaway destination but if you book at least 6 suites at the same time. You can save anywhere from 32 to 43% depending on whether or not your suites are single or double occupancy and whether you visit during the summer or winter. You’ll receive automatic suite upgrades, $150 per day spa credit, and all of your meals.

7. Four Seasons Resort Whistler – British Columbia, Canada

Large groups planning to book at least 10 rooms during the summer at this astounding Whistler resort will get a startlingly low rate of $169 per room per night. Sadly, these rates don’t apply during the winter months – especially near the 2010 Winter Olympics for which almost every hotel is booked in advance. You might, if you’re lucky, find some other great hotels in Whistler available during that time.

6. The Delano, The Shore Club, and The Mondrian – Miami Beach, Florida

This trio of Miami Beach hotels is happy to drop their rates by up to 50% for groups that book at least 10 rooms at a time. With already low nightly rates, a group discount will let you take an affordable trip to Miami this winter for some pre-summer fun in the sun.

5. Banyan Tree Mayakoba – Riviera Maya, Mexico

Hotels and resorts really do appreciate large bookings. At the Banyan Tree Mayakoba in Riviera Maya the rate for a villa will drop from $655 down to $495 when you book at least 8 villas for two nights. Each villa will get a 20% discount in the spa along with a choice of complimentary amenities as well. If these rooms are too expensive, you’ll find plenty of other low-cost options for Riviera Maya hotels as well.

4. Four Seasons Resort – Jackson Hole, Wyoming

The Four Seasons Resort in Jackson Hole, Wyoming is pretty expensive but well worth the trip. Starting at $1,100 per night you can choose from two, three, or five bedroom villas complete with fully stocked kitchens, private cooks, and magically washed laundry. Yes, the rate is high but if you pay for two nights your third will be free.

3. The Pearl – San Diego, California

Rooms in The Pearl usually average around $179 but if you book at least 10 rooms for a summer weekend you’ll see the rate drop down to $129 (that’s almost 30% off). If you book your rooms in conjunction with an event you plan to hold at the hotel – like a dinner, for example – you may see your rates drop even lower.

2. Esperanza – Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

A room in an open air casita overlooking the blue ocean will drop to anywhere between $600-700 per night (normally $675-875) if you book at least five rooms for three nights. You’ll have a private terrace, access to a private beach, and access to a myriad of health and fitness classes as well. Still too expensive for your taste buds? Try booking rooms at some of these other great Cabo San Lucas hotels instead.

1. Coeur D’Alene Resort – Idaho

Large groups are always welcome at family-friendly establishments like the Coeur D’Alene Resort in Idaho. Situated on the waterfront, this resort will make you and your friends feel like you’re hanging out at an extravagant summer camp. If you book a block of 5 rooms you’ll receive a discount up to 30% as well as the assistance of a personal planner to help you put together the rest of your stay.

Gather a group of friends and prepare for your next exciting adventure. The old saying really is true – the more the merrier. And, in this case, the more people you can gather the less expensive your trip will be!

Travel today isn’t as popular as it has been in the past. Therefore, hotels aren’t as likely to upgrade your hotel room free of charge as easily as they would have in the past.

There are, of course, a few instances in which you might find landing an upgrade a bit easier than you originally thought. Try some of these tactics and you might just get lucky.

8. Show Up Late

Most hotels have a standard check-in time and travelers usually show up right at that time or, if they’re visiting on business, right after 5pm. If you want to increase your chances of getting an upgraded room you will want to time your arrival to happen a bit later in the day. The hotels are often rearranging room assignments at that time and may be able to give you something nicer than you had originally anticipated. Beware, though – this can work both ways. If you show up too late you may find that you are the victim of an overbooked hotel and you may be sent to another nearby establishment.

7. Familiarize Yourself with Your Favorite Hotels

Do you usually stay in the same hotels when you travel? If so, take notice of when the hotel is busiest – during the week, on the weekends, or toward the early part of the week. For example, business hotels are often slower on the weekends. If you book your hotel at a time you know is slow than you might have a better chance of receiving an upgrade.

6. Stay One Night

Stay one night – in the upgraded suite, that is. Sometimes a hotel will be more willing to give you a really great suite upgrade in a crowded hotel if you agree to only stay there for one night, taking a different room the next evening. If you’re lucky, no one will pay for the upgraded room and you’ll get to stay there more than one night anyway but its nicer if you let the hotel know you’re willing to move if needed.

5. Be Realistic

Don’t ask the hotel to make special accommodations for you – such as adjoined rooms and special views – and then ask for an upgrade on top of that. Doing so is just plain rude and, to be honest, is demeaning to the hotel staff that worked so hard to find what you requested to begin with. Arranging hotel rooms is an art and takes time. Just because you ask for something better doesn’t mean it’s available.

4. Look for Conferences and Events

Contrary to some of our previous advice, you may have luck booking your stay when you know the hotel is busy – like when there is a conference or concert in town. These are the times the hotel is more likely to overbook and, if you’re lucky enough not to get booted completely, you stand a good chance of finding yourself in a larger room or one with a better view.

3. Loyalty is Key

Do you stay at the same hotel every time you travel? If so, get to know the staff where you stay. The more you get to know each other the more likely it is that the hotel staff will be willing to upgrade your room or, at the very least, waive some of the fees for incidental services.

2. Include the Hotel in Your Plans

Are you traveling for a special occasion like an anniversary, honeymoon, birthday, or graduation? If so, let the hotel know and they might try to find you a room with a special view or more space. Asking for an upgrade just for the sake of asking is – well – tacky.

1. Be Polite

The best thing you can do when trying to score an upgraded hotel room is the easiest – treat the hotel staff, especially those working the front desk, with respect. You may feel tired and grumpy after a long day of traveling but the folks behind the desk have seen 100 grumpy folks just like you already – so trying to assert yourself by acting rudely won’t help your cause. Be nice – it’s the right thing to do and you might just impress the person checking you in.

Just because you try one of the above tactics doesn’t mean you’ll get an upgraded room. The point is that you won’t know if you don’t try but if things don’t work out just be glad that you’re at least getting what you paid for!

Imagine embarking on an exotic vacation only to relax in the spa to find a menu of services similar to what you’d find in the chain of spas located near your home.

What you need to do is find a remote location where you’ll get not only a luxury vacation but an exotic spa treatment as well. Looking for something unique? Try one of these spectacular body treatments.

9. Gold Body Mask – Oman

In some ancient cultures, gold was used to symbolize wealth, power, and immortality. Now, the science of chrysotherapy – or using gold to treat certain medical maladies – is becoming more and more popular. Therapists believe that mixing powdered gold into spa treatments can help absorb pollutants from the skin, giving it a very natural and healthy glow. The Six Senses Hideaway Zighy Bay in Oman offers a gold-and-clay body mask followed by a massage featuring gold-infused body oils.

8. Black Pearl Body Buff – Tahiti

Black pearls, which can only be found in the French Polynesia, are coveted due to their rarity but have virtually the same healing properties as the white pearls you’ll find elsewhere in the world. Pearls, when crushed, are known to have anti-aging properties and when used in skin care products are known to improve circulation. It makes sense, then, that spas throughout Tahiti would crush up black pearls and mix them in nut oils for a massage experience designed to smooth and hydrate the skin at the same time.

7. Queen Conch-Shell Scrub – Turks and Caicos

Off the shores of the Rusk and Caicos islands you’ll find the beautiful queen conch. These shells are incredibly popular because they contain an internal lining made of mother-of-pearl, which is rich in proteins. Because these shells are soft, they can easily be ground and used as a gentle exfoliant to scrub off dead skin. The Regent Palms offers a Mother of Pearl Body Treatment as do several other hotels in Turks and Ciacos.

6. Cedar Massage – Wisconsin

Cedar wood, found in abundance in the Wisconsin woods, is touted by Native American tribes as having purification and cleansing properties. Cedar is used for smudging (burning to cleanse negative energies) and has also been incorporated into massage sessions in several Wisconsin spas. The oils are infused with cedar for a fragrant treatment sure to sooth.

5. Coca Leaf Body Mask – Peru

In South America the coca (not to be confused with cocoa) leaf has long been used in Andean medical treatments. It has been used to treat a wide variety of ailments, including depression, high blood pressure, and even simple headaches. Spas in Peru, like the Inkaterra Machu Picchu, love using the leaf as part of a total body therapy – incorporating it into massages, body masks, and body moisturizers.

4. Argan Oil Massage – Morocco

Women have been collecting the fruit of the Argan tree for centuries – crushing the olive-like fruit and using the oils in both cooking and beauty treatments. The oil has very high levels of Vitamin E and fatty acids and is excellent for hydrating the skin. Resorts in Morocco usually incorporate the oil into their massage treatments, mixing it into body scrubs and clay masks.

3. Tepezcohuite Body Drench – Mexico City

Believe it or not, the Tepezcohuite tree has been known as the “skin tree” for hundreds of hears. The Mayans used the bark of the tree to treat lesions, infections, and wounds. Scientific studies have shown that the bark has a number of antimicrobial properties and nutrients. At the Aurora Spa in Las Alcobas, spa guests can enjoy a Tepezcohuite Body Drench which combines the extracts from the bark with other soothing ingredients for a sensual skin-hydrating experience.

2. Maple Sugar Body Scrub – Vermont

Ever wonder how maple trees survive year round in such cold climates like those found in Vermont? A chemist named Ben Kaminsky wondered the same thing and, after testing the trees, found that maple sap contains a number of incredible antioxidants and minerals. He invented an entire line of products featuring maple ingredients but our favorites are the simple maple sugar body scrubs found in several Vermont resorts and spas.

1. Jade Hot Stone Massage – Beijing

In most Asian countries, Jade is considered to be very powerful. It represents health, beauty, and power and is believed to have a number of healing properties as well. Some cosmetics are made with powder from the beautiful green stones because they are believed to help reduce inflammation and moisturize the skin (probably because of the silica contained within). At The Peninsula in Beijing you’ll find the Jade Hot Stone Massage featuring a facial, acupressure, and hot stones of jade instead of the usual volcanic rock.

You work hard and deserve to treat yourself to something special every once in a while. Relax and let the specialists at your spa take care of the rest!

Every country has its own set of customs and traditions. Some are a bit stranger than others and you may find them to be a bit silly but know this – if you fail to adhere to some of these traditions you may find yourself in some serious hot water. Check out the following travel taboos:

10. Be Mindful of Your Feet

In most Arabian countries, the soles of the feet are considered dirty and impure. They are, after all, the lowest point on the body. Throughout Asia, showing the bottom of your feet is considered an insult. Hint: this is why President Bush should have been more offended at an Iraqi journalist flinging his shoes at him. The guy was trying to send a real message.

9. Insulting Royalty

Never – ever – insult the royal family in Thailand. Here it’s best to follow the old adage “if you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” Those who fail to pay respect to the royal family in Thailand is considered as serious as having done them physical harm and can result in criminal charges being brought against you. Free speech, as we understand it, does not apply in Eastern countries.

8. Leave the Head Alone

While most of us consider reaching out and touching someone’s head to be an act of affection, in many Asian countries it is considered incredibly rude and uncouth. They believe that your soul is contained within your head. Never touch or pat a person’s head when visiting Asian countries (or anywhere, really, if you’re dealing with a stranger).

7. Sneeze in Private

Sneezing and sniffling, in many Asian countries (especially Korea and Japan), is considered barbaric. This is a particularly difficult concept for visitors from the West who aren’t used to spicy foods and suddenly find themselves holding back runny noses. If you have to blow your nose, kindly excuse yourself and leave the room.

6. Shaking Hands

In every country you’ll find different standard greeting methods and shaking hands is not uncommon. In Russia, however, you should never attempt to shake hands with someone until you’ve crossed the threshold and entered (or exited) the building or room. Attempting to shake hands across a threshold will not help you make a great impression.

5. Learn to Control Your Chopsticks

Learn to use your chopsticks properly. Learn to pick things up rather properly than attempting to stab at morsels off food and avoid using your chopsticks to push or pull your dishes around the table. When visiting Asian countries, make sure that you never, ever stand your chopsticks upright in a bowl. Doing so reminds locals of the incense that is burned upon the death of a loved one and you will have, in essence, invited death to join you during your meal.

4. Use Your Right Hand

In some countries, especially in South Asia and the Middle East, the left hand is used for certain hygiene practices only. Don’t try to touch a person with your left hand; don’t look at items in the market with your left hand; and don’t touch your food with your left hand. Muslims believe that Satan eats with his left hand. Do yourself a favor- especially if you are left handed – and practice using your right before you visit one of these foreign lands.

3. Holding Hands

In Middle Eastern countries it is not uncommon for men to hold hands. It is considered a sign of friendship and trust and doing so has no sexual connotation whatsoever. Don’t be offended if a man in an Arab country grabs your hand and – at the same time – be respectful when you see other men holding hands, especially if it’s not the social norm in your own country.

2. Make Eye Contact when Toasting

The origin of “toasting” your drinks is actually pretty interesting. If an assassin had poisoned your drink he would want to watch the toast to make sure that your drinks did not splash together and mix. Therefore, maintaining eye contact during a toast symbolizes a sense of trust – or, proves that you’re not worried about either if you keeling over after taking the first sip. In Europe, the custom is to look directly into the eyes of every person you toast. If you don’t, you’ll be doomed to seven years of a horrible sex life.

1. Don’t Over-Thank Your Hosts

In many countries in South Asia and Arabia it is considered impolite to constantly thank your hosts. They believe that they are supposed to be a generous and gracious host at all times. If you thank them they will think they’ve done something more than expected or standard and you will make them feel awkward. It’ll be hard to do and will certainly feel strange but try to drop ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ from your vocabulary during your visit.

Familiarize yourself with the traditions in the countries you expect to visit and you’ll have no trouble once you arrive. If in doubt ask your hotel concierge what is best. They’re used to dealing with foreigners and will gladly give you the advice you need.

It’s hard to believe our country has been a part of so many wretched battles. Without them, though, we would never have formed into the country we are today. It’s no surprise to find that so many war memorials have sprung up throughout the country.

While many exist in Washington, DC there are others scattered around the United States as well. Below are some of the most visited.

10. Fort Sumter National Monument – South Carolina

Believe it or not, the first battle of the Civil War took place when the Confederates attacked the year-old fort. It had originally been built to protect the coast – a lesson learned after the war of 1812. The National Park service reports that approximately 745 thousand visitors come to the park each year.

9. Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park – Georgia & Tennessee

During the fall of 1863, some of the hardest battles of the civil war were fought in the hills of Chickamauga and Chattanooga. Confederate soldiers had the upper hand at first but later lost ground to the Union army. The park includes over 5,200 acres of beautiful land, monuments, and hiking trails for its 993 thousands visitors to explore.

8. Minute Man National Historic Park – Concord, Massachusetts

Minute Man National Historic Park certainly does deserve recognition. This ground is the site where the American Revolution officially began. The soldiers stationed here were called “minute men” because they were ready to fight at a “minute’s notice” to protect their country from the British. More than 1.067 million visit each year to explore the park grounds.

7. Valley Forge National Historic Park – Pennsylvania

Thousands of soldiers spent the winter in Valley Forge under the direction of George Washington during the Revolutionary War. While many of their comrades died, the soldiers fought bravely throughout the cold months and emerged victorious. Almost 1.3 million people visit to learn about the war, by watching live history demonstrations and exploring the local monuments.

6. World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument – Oahu, Hawaii

Exactly 1,177 crew members were killed during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and in 1958 President Eisenhower approved the plans to build a monument in their honor. The USS Arizona Memorial was completed in 1961 and sits above the remains of the sunken USS Arizona. The monument is one of eight (all in different sites) that is included in the World War II Valor memorial created by President Bush in 2008 and is visited by approximately 1.4 million people annually.

5. Gettysburg National Military Park – Pennsylvania

Gettysburg was, of course, the site of the nastiest battle during the Civil War and the place where Lincoln made his famous speech ending the conflict. He dedicated the grounds to those who died fighting for a cause they believed in. Almost 1.5 million people visit each year to learn about the war and pay their respects.

4. Korean War Memorial – Washington, DC

Just south of the National Mall you’ll find West Potomac Park, the home of the Korean War Memorial. The memorial includes 19 bronze statues, a wall outlining a list of the nations that sent troops to the war, and the renowned “Pool of Remembrance.” More than 3.6 million people venture to this memorial every year.

3. World War II Memorial – Washington, DC

The classy World War II Memorial is just under 10 years old but is already a respected site. The memorial includes a semicircle made of pillars – each one adorned with an eagle and a wreath. The pillars each represent one of the states present in 1945 and are beautifully maintained for the nearly 4.2 million people who visit annually.

2. Arlington Cemetery – Washington, DC

At Arlington Cemetery you’ll find rows and rows of neatly arranged tombstones marking the resting places of some of our nation’s most honored heroes. The national cemetery is home to JFK’s grave, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and a myriad of other memorials. More than 4 million people visit the cemetery every year.

1. Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial – Washington, DC

The Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial is an astounding site and draws more than 4.2 million visitors each year. The original V-shaped memorial was designed in 1981 and, at the time, was controversial due to its design. The Vietnam Women’s Memorial, bronze statues, and homage to The Three Soldiers were all added later on.

There are, literally, hundreds of war memorials and each deserves the same amount of attention. Please respectfully remember that these memorials are only the ones that the United States Park Services have monitored for visitor counts. Every single war monument in the country deserves our respect – as does each soldier, past and present.

Keeping some of your prized possessions near you at all times is of utmost importance during travel. You do, of course, want to ensure that you look good while carrying them around. There are, fortunately, dozens of cool new carry-on bags designed to meet airline specifications while giving you a fashion-friendly boost as well. Check out some of the neatest new designs.

10. The ZUCA Pro

The ZUCA Pro suitcase is extra cool for a number of reasons. First, it is designed to include a number of pull-out drawers in which you can pack or store your belongings in an organized manner. Second, it doubles as a seat, ensuring you’ll never have to fight over a chair in an airport or trail terminal lounge ever again. The suitcase, made with an aluminum alloy frame, can hold up to three hundred pounds.

9. Bree

The German-made line of Bree bags is certainly artistic. Most of their bags are made out of a vinyl material which, contrary to what you might believe at first sight, is actually very durable and travels considerably well. The bag opens vertically, making it easy to pack, and features a number of small compartments for you to safely store your accessories. Three external pockets make packing your “must have” items within easy reach a cinch.

8. Full Sky Bag

The Full Sky Bag by the French chain known as La Chaise Longue is a fun bag that is both eye appealing and functional. Featuring an image of clouds against a blue sky, the hard-topped bag is fashionable and durable at the same time. At a mere $95, it’s affordable, too.

7. Hideo Wakamatsu

Designer Hideo Wakamatsu has turned the creation of carry-on bags, attaches, and purses into his business. He recognizes the need to blend traditional Japanese customs with modern technology and the results are incredibly durable products with appealing aesthetics. The Easel Picture Frame Trolley, for example, has a strong ABS shell and was designed to have a mirror finish. It’s incredibly strong and nice to look at, too.

6. Paul Smith

Paul Smith bags are perfect for men looking to pull or carry their belongings in luggage that screams masculinity. The luggage resembles a sit of pin-stripe suites except – you know- they’re suitcases made out of canvas instead. The outside features the standard Paul Smith multi-stripe and the inside features a purple lining.

5. Samsonite

You’ve probably heard of Samsonite before and for good reason. This name brand company has recently taken strides to move out of the realm of the functional and into the realm of high fashion with functionality. The Sahora trolley bag is a great start, featuring a ballistic nylon shell (also very strong), colorful interior and exterior linings, and TSA approved locks.

4. Mandarina Duck – Isi and Touch

Based out of Bologna, Italy the Mandarina Duck company is well known for creating a stunning line incredibly functional luggage. The carry-on bags found in their Isi and Touch lines are full of extra features. Choose the oblong Isi bag or the square Touch bag. Either will prove easy to pack, easy to transport (on wheels), and easy to tuck into the small overhead storage unit you’re sure to encounter.

3. Mandarina Duck – File

The File line of luggage, also made by Mandarina Duck, offers affordable packing solutions to business travelers. The File line blends the standard carryon bag with special accommodations for laptops and other business needs. The towbar is extra long, making it easy for travelers to attach their briefcases for easy transport as well.

2. Titan

The German-made Titan carry-on is one of the hottest bags you’ll ever see. The bright colors ensure you’ll be noticed – and might deter thieves in the process. The 6 pound bag was designed with a polycarbonate shell making it one of the most durable bags on the market as well. It even has a lock that has been officially approved by the TSA.

1. Rimowa

Rimowa is yet another awesome German brand of luggage. The idea is to look as high-tech as possible (think James Bond) without adding a high-tech quality price tag. The Salsa bag has a polycarbonate frame that can take as much pressure as an airplane cabin can dish and, if it gets squished, it will return back to its original size and shape once the pressure is gone. How’s that for durability?

Purchasing luggage may require a small investment but shouldn’t break the bank. The pieces in this segment range from affordable single pieces starting at $100 up to full sets topping out at $800. You’re bound to find something that suits your individual needs!

Do you remember when booking your honeymoon hotel suite meant you would probably get the best view, a larger bed, and a private hot tub?
