Ghost hunting may, to many, seem like a silly and frivolous endeavor. To those who truly believe in the supernatural and the existence of trapped spirits, however, ghost hunting is an incredibly serious hobby. Many states even have formal Ghost Hunting clubs and organizations where individuals can get together to discuss tips, techniques, ghost hunting tools and, of course, the best places to watch for ghosts.

Ghost Hunting Tips and Guidelines

Most novice ghost hunters think it’s alright to simply grab a flashlight, find a deserted building or area, and simply start exploring. While these may be great places to watch for ghosts there are a few rules and regulations you need to keep in mind before you embark on your first ghost hunting adventure.

First of all, you should never go on a ghost hunting expedition alone. You should have at least one other person with you at all times, even if he isn’t really into ghost hunting the way you are. Having a second person with you will ensure you have a witness if anything strange happens but, most important, will ensure you have a second person on hand in the event of an emergency.

The next important step is to visit any ghost hunting site in daylight before exploring it at night. The reason you need to visit during the day is because you will be able to see any warning signs or hazards. Doing so will help you to avoid being arrested for trespassing and will ensure you don’t injure yourself in ditches, holes, or in areas with unstable construction.

Speaking of unstable construction, you really shouldn’t do any ghost hunting in a building that has been condemned, on strange cliff sides, or in any other area that could cause you to risk your life. Seeing a ghost isn’t worth the chance if it means you may be joining them on the other side.

Always carry a watch, logbook, tape recorder, camera, flashlight, and any other necessary equipment you can think of. Carry extra batteries so that your records of the event aren’t cut short. Carry only what you need. The more you carry, the more your attention will be turned away from the hunt itself.

The Best Places to Ghost Hunt

There are tons of ideal places to go if you want to look for ghosts but the absolute best places to go ghost hunting are in old churches, graveyards, and old castles. Old churches, the ones with their own graveyards out front, are usually always crawling with some sort of supernatural or paranormal activity. Look for old, rural towns and do your research. If you don’t find a church with its own graveyard nearby you may find one that was built on top of an old graveyard instead.

Graveyards are a great place to look for ghosts for a couple of reasons. The history at your average graveyard usually isn’t littered with strange stories of torture and murder. They’re usually exactly what they are supposed to be – simple graveyards. The size of the graveyard you choose to visit doesn’t really matter but it’s reasonable to assume that the larger the graveyard the better your chances of spotting a spirit.

Old castles are usually rich with incredible history. There are stories of plots to take over lands, dungeons, tortures, murders, and outright community punishment. Visit an old castle (if you can get in legally) if you want to search for some of the most troubled spirits.

Trukee, California

One of the most notable recent ghost hunting adventures took place this past September in Trukee, California. Ghost hunters from Haunted and Paranormal Investigations (HPI) gathered at the The Truckee Hotel so that they could tour the hotel itself, the local town jail, a local restaurant and a few other Lake Tahoe locations believed to be haunted. You may have missed the formal tour but if you head on out that way yourself (with a ghost hunting partner, of course) you never know what (or who) you might see.

New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans has long been embraced as an incredible place to research paranormal activity, with stories of spirits and haunting dating back decades. If you contact the New Orleans Paranormal and Occult Research Society you may even be able to find someone familiar with the area and join in on a local hunt.

West Virginia Penitentiary – Moundsville, West Virginia

Not ready to try your hand at ghost hunting on your own? The West Virginia Penitentiary in Moundsville is believed to be haunted and ghost hunters from around the country flock there between March and November each year to try to track looming spirits. Tickets go on sale for the upcoming season each January and your session lasts from 8pm until 6am the following morning on the evening you book. You’ll get a guided tour of the facility, a dinner, and will then have the chance to try your hand at ghost hunting on your own.

Ghost hunting isn’t for you? No problem. If it is your cup of tea, though, you’ll want to proceed with extreme caution. You never know what spirits may be awaiting your arrival!

When we, as human beings, go to sleep at night an entirely different world unfolds. Nocturnal animals wake, stars shoot across the sky, and adventures we can only dream of take place. Those of us who are snoozing are missing out on a ton of fun and excitement. Unless, that is, you check out one or two of these incredibly fun and adventurous evening excursions as listed in the Travel and Leisure’s collection of the World’s Top Nighttime Adventures!

In Washington State you’ll find a group called REI Adventures, offering a three-day weekend trip in which guests get the opportunity to kayak around the San Juan Islands. Orca whales and seals are definitely cool but in the evening, when the glowing dinoflagellates come out, you’ll have the opportunity to see the waters around the islands glow and sparkle.

9. Starlit Skiing – Quebec

If you love skiing you won’t want to miss out on the opportunity to ski the slopes of Mount Siante- Anne at night. On the highest nighttime slopes in North America you’ll find more than nine miles of mountainside split amongst 17 distinct trails. Evening trails are open for the entirety of the winter season.

8. Night Safari – Singapore Zoo

The Singapore Zoo is well known for its Night Safari adventures. This beautiful park was actually designed for evening visits when animals are awake and stirring in the most natural environment possible. You’ll see Asian deer, hyenas, Tibetan blue sheep, and over 100 other nocturnal creates – awake and ready to welcome you.

7. Overnight Mountain Biking – Utah

Armed with only a bike light mounted to your handlebars, the folks at Rim Tours will guide you on a three to four hour evening adventure across some of the roughest trails in Moab, Utah. If you’re looking for a real adventure you should visit during October when the 24 Hours of Moab Race takes place.

6. Evening Jungle Hikes – Belize

In the Cayo District of Belize you’ll find the earth-friendly Black Rock Lodge. After dark falls, the lodge’s guides will lead you on a hike in search of some of the area’s nocturnal critters. You’ll follow the Macal River in search of howler monkeys, tapirs, snakes, and dozens of other local wildlife. If you’re lucky you may even catch a glimpse of the elusive Jaguar.

5. Evening Orienteering – Minnesota

Those into sporting and games will enjoy an evening of orienteering in Minnesota. The Minnesota Orienteering Club organizes meets where runners are sent out – alone- into the woods with only a headlamp, compass, and small map. Runners are looking for flags to keep them on course but, of course, they’re all hidden in the dark woods.

4. Northern Lights – Yukon

A trip to see the Northern Lights is a trek everyone should make at least once. Visible from the Yukon Territory of Canada, you’ll find several tour groups willing to guide you on overnight trips to see the astounding aurora borealis from the tiny town of Whitehorse. Hiking and canoeing trips are available as well.

3. Full Moon Parties – Thailand

Every single month you’ll find villages scattered throughout Thailand illuminating themselves for Full Moon Festivals. The best parties are found on the beaches at Koh Phangan, one of the nicest islands in the area, where visitors from around the world gather to celebrate and honor the moon with food, music, and dance.

2. Nighttime Safari – Australia

Exploring Australia’s Grampians National Park after dark is an experience like no other. Your guide will take you on a 4 wheel drive excursion out of the city of Melbourne and into the woods where you’ll have the opportunity to see some of Australia’s wildlife in its natural habitat. Huge spotlights will make it easy to see emus, kangaroos, wallabies and dozens of other creatures.

1. Capture the Flag – US and Canada

The game of capture the flag has not died. As a matter of fact, this game is slowly reviving itself in a large outdoor rendition encompassing cities around the United States and Canada. Modern games involve hundreds of players, many of which find darting around college campuses and city squares after dark in search of hidden flags to be an exciting way to spend the evening.

Looking for something to do after dark? Take a break from your standard movie or walk in the park and either visit one of these incredible sites or organize a game of your own. How you choose to spend the night is up to you!

Summer isn’t over until it’s officially over and there are still a few weeks left to squeeze in a few more summer activities – even if you have to cram them in on the weekends between school days.

There are tons of classic summer activities scattered throughout the United States and if you look carefully you might just find something you’ve never considered trying before.

10. The Edible Garden – New York

The Edible Garden is an 11-week festival hosted by the New York Botanical Garden. The festival features gardening demonstrations, lectures, and classes and talks featuring some of the area’s hottest celebrity chefs. The festival, held in the Bronx, will run until September 13th.

9. All Points West Music & Arts Festival – Jersey City

It’s too late to make it in 2009 but the All Points West Music & Arts Festival held at Liberty State Park in Jersey City, NJ (across the river from Manhattan) is an event you won’t want to miss in 2010 and beyond. Favorite bands like Coldplay, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and the Beastie Boys entertain crowds for 3 full days.

8. Clam Box – Ipswich, Massachusetts

In Ipswich, Massachusetts you’ll find a seafood landmark. The clam Box has been part of the town for more than 70 years. The building itself was built to resemble a take-out container but the quality of the food is so much better than your standard to-go style fare. The gigantic serving of friend clams you take home will make the long wait in line outside well worth the time spent.

7. Yankee Stadium – New York

Head on over to the Bronx for an amazing day in Yankee Stadium, a trip you can even make in the early fall. What you really need to do while you’re there, though, is take a trip away from your seats to explore some of the awesome dining establishments located inside. You’ll enjoy eggplant parm from Mike’s Arthur Avenue Italian Deli, barbeque from Jimmy’s BBQ, and delicious mojitos from Tommy Bahama’s Bar.

6. Festival del Sol – Napa Valley, California

Wine lovers will really appreciate the Festival del Sol, an annual event held in Napa Valley California each year. This year’s event, held in July, was located in a variety of different venues throughout the area and featured wine tastings and classical recitals by the likes of Renee Fleming.

5. Vermont Festival of the Arts – Mad River Valley, Vermont

The Vermont Festival of the Arts will be held in Mad River Valley from August 1st through September 6th. The month-long festival features local artists and musicians as they share their love of the arts in events scattered throughout the entire month. Make sure you catch a glimpse of the stellar Vermont Philharmonic while you’re there.

4. Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival – Santa Fe, New Mexico

The summer of 2009 proudly hosted the inaugural event for the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. The festival schedule features concerts to be held at various locations throughout the city between July 19th and August 24th. Keep your eyes peeled for next year’s events to make sure you don’t miss out on professional narrations and stellar performances.

3. Paddleboarding

Paddleboarding is one of the newest water sports to bring beachgoers to the waves and if you haven’t given it a shot you still have time. Paddleboarding is like surfboarding except the board is wider, making it easier to stand, and the paddle makes it easier to move around. You can learn to paddleboard in just about any beach town but if you head towards Waikiki you’ll find a few sports shops giving out lessons as well.

2. Crab Claw – St. Michaels, Maryland

The Crab Claw, a Maryland favorite, is well known for serving some of the best blue crab in the area. If you visit early in the morning you’ll get to see local fisherman dropping off the crabs they’ve caught for the day. The menu features not only spiced crabs but coleslaw, rock fish, and a myriad of other delicious seafood dishes.

1. Liberty Hotel Bike Rentals – Boston, Massachusetts

If you’re looking for something really different to do, try renting a bicycle from either the Liberty Hotel in Beacon Hill or the Charles Hotel in Harvard Square – both Boston establishments. Both hotels are now renting bicycles to guests so that they can explore the five mile section of the city located between each. Gliding along the Charles River on an Electra Amsterdam Classic bicycle will prove a really wonderful way to wrap up a summer afternoon.

Summer doesn’t have to end just because Labor Day rolls around. Enjoy the few weeks of warmth and sunshine you have left by embracing all the United States has to offer!

The peaks of Mount Everest stand proud in Kathmandu, Nepal. Drawing mountain climbers from all over the world, the mountain trek once reserved for only the most experienced climbers is now open game for anyone willing to make the time and effort.

A trek to the mountain’s ominous peak, at 29,000 feet, isn’t right for everyone, though. As a matter of fact, only around 1,000 people have gone all the way to the peak since the early 1950’s. Those who aren’t willing to take the risk can join tour groups that will guide them through the lower trails while teaching them about native culture.

No matter what trails you’re preparing to take, there is a significant amount of preparation you need to make before you embark on your journey. Take the following into consideration before you book your flight to Kathmandu.

Physically Preparing to Climb Mount Everest

Your trek up Mount Everest will be the most incredible experience of your lifetime. With that in mind, you’ll want to make sure your body is in the right physical condition before you even make an attempt.

Start by visiting your doctor for a complete physical. You’ll need to make sure you have great cardiac health and it will be important to make sure your blood pressure and cholesterol are under control. Poor cardiac health means your body won’t be able to properly pump blood throughout your body, resulting in a lack of oxygen in an already oxygen-depleted area as well as an inability to keep your body warm.

You’ll also need to begin a physical training regime, including running and strength training. We highly recommend you take a mountain climbing course to refresh your technical skills before you start making practice climbs in high-altitude terrain. You should work with a skilled instructor or partner to practice climbing on all sorts of surfaces in all types of weather and should, at a minimum, practice for at least two or three years before attempting Mount Everest.

Financially Planning to Climb Mount Everest

One of the reasons so few make it to the top is not a lack of desire, but a lack of financial opportunity. The average trip to the peak of Mount Everest can range from $25,000 to $60,000 depending upon whether or not you’re arranging your own trip or working with a guided tour group.

At least $10,000 of the cost will include your environmental protection deposit, insurance, and Sherpa fees. If you’re smart you’ll save your garbage and empty oxygen bottles for return at the end of the trip, at which point you’ll get your $4,000 environmental deposit back. Other fees include your airfare or travel arrangements, training and equipment, extra oxygen bottles, and lodging before and after the actual climb.

Many climbers spend years raising the funds to make a trip up Mount Everest. If you’re an experience climber you may want to consider asking larger corporations to help sponsor your trip. We recommend approaching your own employer or some of the better known mountain climbing gear companies for help first.

Timing Your Mount Everest Climb

The best time of year to climb Mount Everest is in May. The weather during the month of May is more predictable, though you’ll still be subject to frigid temperatures and whiteout conditions.

Image credit: Marc van der Chijs

Make sure you pick the date for your climb at least six months in advance. You’ll need plenty of time to apply for your permits and obtain permission from the Nepal Ministry and Administration. You’ll also need to make arrangements with the Sherpa to help guide you and with local trekking groups to help you move your gear.

Mount Everest Safety Considerations

It’s important to pack the appropriate gear before making your trip. You’ll need first aid kits, standard medications, thermal mountain climbing clothing, extra oxygen bottles, and much more. Everything you carry should be specially graded for use in cold weather.

No one can climb Mount Everest alone, nor would he be given the proper permits if he attempted to. If you’re not climbing with a guided tour group, make sure the team you are climbing with is experienced and is prepared to take all necessary safety precautions.

The conditions on Mount Everest have been known to change quickly and dramatically. Climbing the summit, while a life changing experience, is also incredibly dangerous. Those you do so risk losing their life to injury, avalanche, frostbite, illness, and high-altitude afflictions. If you, at any time, feel ill or fatigued you should call off your trip and return to the base of the mountain.

It takes years to properly prepare for climb to the peak of Mount Everest. Consider yourself special if you’re one of the lucky few who make it to the top. It’s a once in a lifetime experience not everyone will be able to enjoy!

Sex. The very word is equally as alluring and seductive as its physical counterpart. Songs have been dedicated to sex, cults have worshipped it, crimes have been committed in the name of sex and power can be gained from it. They say that the average person thinks about sex every seven seconds (if that’s the case, I need to up my game) and engage in it well, not as frequently as seven seconds, but frequently nonetheless! With so much fascination towards this three-letter-word, it wasn’t long until it was celebrated by way of joyous festivals, where hordes of like minded sexual enthusiasts, exhibitionists, fetishists and the voyeuristic come out to play to explore the many facets and “kinks” of sex.

Below is a list of ten sex festivals from around the globe, most of which are celebrated annually. Starting at number 10:

Turtles: sadistic and kinky

10. The London Festival Of Tantra

“We were just doing yoga and she kinda just fell into my lap?” Pradeep bitterly failed in his excuse.

New in the sex festival scene, the LFoT was established on September 27, 2008 as the first in an ongoing series of festivals to focus on, and celebrate the spiritual aspect of Tantric sexuality. If learning about how to achieve multiple orgasms in a marathon sex session that extends to hours on end with a bunch of embracing and open-minded people isn’t incentive enough to attend, I don’t know what is. Activities include ritual footwashing, massage therapy, color therapy, psychic and spiritual healing and you can also get free hugs with love from a “Squeezy Fairy”. Now isn’t that nice?

For more information, visit their official website.

9. Sex Worker Film and Arts Festival

You know you want that “Natural Born Hooker” t-shirt. Don’t lie.

Established in 1999, the San Francisco SWF&AF was formed to recognise the accomplishments of sex worker artists and filmmakers and to show work about sex workers and sex industries from around the world. The Sex Worker Festival also provides an opportunity to recognize and honour prostitutes, dancers, adult film actors and other sex workers who have historically been a dynamic part of arts communities. Performance events, parties, art exhibitions, film screenings and educational discussions and seminars all make up this festival’s activities. My favourite porn star in a dramatic puff piece she made herself? This I have to see!

For more information, visit their official website.

8. Kinky Copenhagen

Extraterrestrial erotica: the next generation of smut

Sounding like a sweetened sex ale that rolls off the tongue, kinky definitely is the word that comes to mind when describing this Danish festival. Held every October, you will find dildos, whips, leather and latex galore as well as many strippers and pornstars abound.

7. Kutemajrvi Sex Festival

Animated depiction of a dream professor

Considered the more intellectual sex festival due to professional lectures being given on all aspects of sexuality during its run, this erotic Finnish event will stimulate both your mind and body. Don’t think the sexiest thing you’ll only see here is the word, “intercourse” written on a blackboard, the festival also features your usual, run of the mill sex merchandise stalls and erotic strip shows. Unless the professor was a scantily clad Angelina Jolie lookalike “talking dirty” to a class, now THAT would be another sexy highlight.

6. Extasia

3D porn. Mmmmmm, trippy.

Spawned from the lusty minds of the lovely Swiss folk, Extasia is a massive sex festival that plays host to the world’s most internationally renowned porn stars, where smut revellers can then engage in a meet and greet with their favourite actors/actresses. You can also hang out with the infamous Playboy bunnies and playmates in the Playboy Club Tour and for the ladies, there’s a “Women’s Only Menstrippers Zone”, where every gyration will bring a cheeky smile to your face. The festival also boasts a 3D Sex Cinema, a Fetish Village and offers Tantric sex courses and sex toy shopping outlets for the sexually inclined.

For more information, visit their official website.

5. Erots

Despair over their failed comeback tour forced The Backstreet Boys to turn to a new creative outlet.

For many, the city of Riga in Latvia is a place unheard or barely spoken of. But in reality, this modest city is transforming into a sexual mecca, much like Montreal or Amsterdam which, every year for the past decade, has played host to a huge sex festival, simply known as “Erots”. Like most festivals, Erots features strip shows, sex toy shops and the like. Be prepared to wait in line though, as apparently queues can reach up to 100 metres or more, all the while suffering Riga’s harsh, cold weather!

For more information, visit their official website.

4. Eroticon

Lech Kaczynski: Party pooper

The annual four day Eroticon festival held in Warsaw, Poland took a different route unlike its sister festivals by staging “World Sex Championships” from within its venue confines, a controversial highlight of their program. In 2004, Pink Press, the festival’s organisers, were threatened to be prosecuted by Warsaw Mayor (now Polish President), Lech Kaczynski, under the charge of “procuring women”. Kaczynski’s intrusion caused quite a stir and gave the event excellent publicity however, the organisers were then forced to keep this “championship” under wraps and subsequently, removed from the program altogether. Eager attendees of the festival are usually treated to pornographic book & film stalls, lingerie & erotic shows as well as a chance to witness history in the making – the trumping of the current world sex record. I’d hate to be the one cleaning up after this erm, competition.

For more information, visit their official website.

3. Sex Culture Festival

“Does my butt look big in this?” The only time men in the audience responded with an affirming, “NO”.

Who said the Chinese were a conservative bunch? The Sex Culture Festival was conceived in 2003, where admission was free of charge until it reached its third year – the charge rising up to 10 yuan, the reason being to keep visitor numbers down and to keep sexually intrigued children out. Activities range from talks on birth control to pleasure toys, a photo show on sexual health and eugenics, forums on sexology, quizzes and lingerie shows. Bad news for the citizens of Guangzhou though as admission has apparently gone up to 30 yuan recently, triple its usual fee. Boo.

2. Madrid Erotica Festival

The heavens parted and Natalia’s ethereal glow stunned onlookers.

The famous Madrid Erotica Festival, formerly known as the Barcelona Erotica festival, is a yearly event held in the month of June. Raunchier than its rival festivals, the MEF summons to its grand stage over 150 porn stars from all over the world to do, well, what pornstars do. Festival goers are able to watch live orgies and steamy sex shows ranging from gay, straight or mixed and check out lingerie, BDSM and other fetish related expos. If you’re looking to get more involved in all the sexy fun, you can enter your own porn movie into their annual competition and share your “masterpiece” with the world. Only 30 minutes is allowable though, don’t get too carried away. Showoff.

1. Sextival

Catwoman finally got the upper hand. Bruce Wayne happily complied.

Israel held their very first sex festival, aptly named Sextival, at Hanger 11 in the northern Tel Aviv port on February of 2008. Started by former Israeli model, Nitzan Kirshenboim, a 32 year old mother of two, her goal was to raise a healthy awareness of sex amongst the masses instead of keeping the issue out in the dark. A bold move, considering the conservatism of Israeli society and only speak of sex in hushed tones. The festival showcased sex toys for both men and women, erotic lingerie, strip shows and even some Playboy bunnies who were bombarded by autograph requests. More sex and awareness of sex in the Middle East may spell more peace. One can only hope.

We know quite a few people who can’t move more than 10 feet with a pair of skis strapped to their feet. We’re always astounded when it comes time to watch professional skiers and snowboarders brave the black diamond trails at some of the world’s popular ski resorts.

But what happens when you start to get bored with your favorite pastime? You can either waste your time searching for the next best ski jump or you can take your favorite sport to a whole new extreme. Introducing Heli-Skiing – the next big extreme sport hosted by our friends in Alaska.

What is Heli-Skiing?

For those who aren’t aware, heli-skiing is not your average ski experience. As a matter of fact, if you arrive at the start of your journey expecting to see a ski lift you’re in for a frightening surprise.

Your ski lift is a helicopter and you’ll be carried from your starting point to the top of the Chugach Mountains where you’ll have no choice but to find your way back to the bottom. The mountains near Valdez aren’t your average mountain – they’re made up of steep ridges and fantastic chutes that dare even the most experienced skiers and snowboarders to accept their challenges.

There are several different heli-skiing outfitters in Alaska aside from the ones in Valdez. You’ll also find providers in Girdwood and Cordova, but we encourage you to research all three before planning your trip. You’re going to spend a significant amount of money for this ski experience, one that is often booked well over a year in advance. Treat this trip as you would any other major event in your life – maybe even more carefully than you would plan your wedding!

Points North Heli-Adventures, Inc.

The Points North Heli-Adventures group uses the southeast side of the Chugach Mountains as a base point and provides visitors with over 1,500 square miles of snowy terrain. It costs well over $900 per day to ski here and the average person is able to fit between 8 and 12 helicopter runs into the day.

Valdez Heli-Ski Guides

The Valdez group has a couple of different options for visitors depending on whether you’re looking to ski for a day or stay in the area for an entire week. Much like Points North, the daily pass is over $900. Those looking to stay a bit longer can book a seven-night package at the Valdez Harbor Inn. The package includes your room, breakfast, lunch, and at least 30 skiable helicopter runs. The package for an entire week is a little over $7,000.

Chugach Powder Guides

The Chugach Powder Guides are able to offer visitors over 100,000 feet of vertical ski slopes per trip. The average trip with this group lasts seven days and is reserved for the more experienced skier. Accommodations include a stay at the Tordrillo Mountain Lodge, all of your meals, and even transportation to and from the airport in Anchorage.

Things to Consider Before Booking Your Heli-Skiing Trip

Consider the type of skier you are before choosing your trip dates. The heli-skiing season runs from early February to late April. Skiing in February means you’ll have more snow, but less daylight. Later in the season the snow may come up to your shins instead of your hips, but your environment will be a little warmer and brighter as well.

Be prepared to follow a safety guide as you ski down the Chugach Mountain paths. Weather patterns in this area can change quickly and skiers often follow a guide one at a time to avoid the risk of avalanches. Check with your tour group to find out if you’re required to pay for helicopter time in advance or only when it’s used. If you pay for time and flights are cancelled due to weather you’ll have a difficult time getting reimbursement.

Heli-skiing adventures offer a fun and exciting change of scenery for the adrenaline junkie and extreme sports enthusiast. The rest of us will watch from the bottom of the slopes!

The sport of fishing certainly doesn’t have to be a summer event only. Ice fishing enthusiasts all over know that it’s just as fun to score a fish in the middle of a frozen lake as it is to cast a fly into the bay during those warmer months.

While ice fishing requires a different set of skill and some specialized equipment, it can be just as fun and productive as any other winter sport. Besides, even in the dead of winter the best fresh fish to eat is the one you caught yourself!

We’ve spent a considerable amount of time touring frozen lakes in an attempt to determine which spots were the hottest for ice fishing. Here are a few of our favorites!

Lake Michigan Harbors – Illinois

Southern Illinois most likely won’t get cold enough for good ice fishing this season, but the lakes of northern Illinois will be frozen solid and waiting. Lake Michigan is pretty vast, but some of the best ice fishing spots can be found along the harbors at Burnham, Montrose, and Belmont.

The thickness of the ice here changes depending on how cold the winds make the water. If the waters are safe you’ll find plenty of rainbow trout, brown trout, and even coho salmon.

Lake Champlain – New York

Lake Champlain in New York is usually full of a unique variety of both cold and warm water fish. One of the best places for ice fishing in the state, you’re likely to find a pretty wide variety of choices. During the winter months you can usually find perch, landlocked salmon, smelts, lake trout, and almost a dozen other varieties.

Strawberry Reservoir – Utah

The lake at Strawberry Reservoir tends to freeze early, but also tends to freeze unevenly, so take caution when approaching this lake. Once you find a safe place to fish you can start by drilling holes out by the weed beds (if there are any). The shallow waters here are the best place to find rainbow trout that are attempting to feed, especially in the earlier winter months.

Later in the winter you’ll want to move further out on the lake. Not catching any fish? Try moving a couple of feet over and drilling a new hole. Sometimes the difference of only a few feet can make a huge difference when ice fishing.

Caples and Silver Lakes – California

When people think of ice fishing they don’t usually think of Northern California, but there are plenty of great ice fishing spots here, including both Caples and Silver Lakes. The best places to fish are along the highway, but the waters are drawn down before they have a chance to freeze, so make sure you venture far enough out on the lake before you start drilling.

Drill several holes in the area you wish to fish. Drilling holes will allow sunlight to penetrate the ice, drawing fish looking for a bit of warmth towards the surface.

Chequamegon Bay – Wisconsin

Just off of Lake Superior you’ll find the often stormy waters of Chequamegon Bay. If you do choose to fish here, make sure you take properly functioning communication equipment with you, as the weather tends to change very quickly.

The only real way to catch any fish here is if you are able to take a snowmobile or ATV out to some of the subtle humps. You’ll find plenty of salmonids, walleyes, and pike in these waters – all perfect for the frying pan.

Caspian Lake – Greensboro, Vermont

Anglers in Vermont aren’t quick to put their gear away after the summer months draw to an end. They wait with baited breath for the lakes to freeze over so that they can get back out on the water and start fishing again.

Perch are a common catch during ice fishing months in Vermont. As with many other locations, it’s best to spend only a short amount of time at each hole before moving on to a new one if you aren’t getting any bites. Secret sources tell us that perch are attracted to brightly colored lures, too!

Higgins Lake – Michigan

There are dozens of incredible lakes for ice fishing in Michigan, but for a true cold water ice fishing experience you need to head on over to Higgins Lake. The waters here are much deeper, supporting more cold water fish than you ever dared dream.

Proceed with caution at Higgins Lake. The lake does freeze, but slowly, so ice fishing isn’t usually safe until mid to late January. Watch out for yellow perch on both the northern and southern shores with lake trout towards the deeper centers.

Of course, testing the ice is essential, no matter where you decide to fish. Never take a flying leap out onto the ice without looking at where you’re going first. Ice near the shoreline of any body of water will always be thinner than further out, so make sure you take a deep enough step onto the ice to get started. Poke holes in the ice every few yards to test the thickness before moving forward as well. Ice fishing is a tremendous sport but is best done with a buddy so that one can act quickly if there is ever an ice-driven emergency.

Once you’ve found a safe place and taken all of the necessary precautions you can start fishing. Enjoy, and good luck!

Skydiving enthusiasts enjoy the thrill and rush of jumping out of moving objects suspended thousands of feet above earth. What happens, though, when jumping out of planes gets a little boring? Many would vote that the next logical step is BASE jumping, but what does that really mean?

Exploring BASE Jumping vs. Skydiving

The “BASE” in BASE jumping is actually an acronym that stands for Building, Antenna, Span, and Earth. In short, BASE jumpers leap from fixed objects which will essentially fit into one of these four main categories.

Think that sounds easy? It’s not. BASE jumpers don’t have the luxury of a plane to take them to the safest altitude or location while considering the speed or strength of the wind on any given day. As a matter of fact, BASE jumping and skydiving, while appearing to be similar in nature, are actually two very different activities – and BASE jumping is much more dangerous.

Participants in this extreme sport identify a location to jump from and are often jumping very close to the object itself; for example, falling within feet of the side of the building or cliff they’ve just jumped from. Because they’re often jumping from lower heights than skydivers, BASE jumpers can’t take advantage of aerodynamics created by the drop combined with air to control their bodies in the air.

Skydivers have around 10-12 seconds after their jump before their bodies slow down and they can open their parachutes. BASE jumpers have mere seconds from jump to ground, mandating control of their bodies and demanding that their parachutes open in about half the time a regular parachute would. The average skydiver takes at least three minutes (often longer) to reach the ground after opening his parachute. BASE jumpers have mere seconds until landing.

Most sky divers have a backup parachute in case the first one doesn’t open. BASE jumpers don’t have that luxury. Even if they could carry one, the speed of acceleration as they near the ground would not allow them time to open it. Despite the dangers, BASE jumpers around the world are driven by adrenaline and love searching for the next unique jump point.

Is BASE Jumping Legal?

Skydiving is highly regulated by the FAA due to its use of airplanes. Because BASE jumpers don’t use airplanes they are not held to the same level of scrutiny. There are a couple of important considerations to keep in mind before embarking on a BASE jump, though. Jumpers need to be sure they have permission from the other of the platform from which he wants to jump as well as from the owner of the spot where he wishes to land.

While the act of BASE jumping is legal, trespassing is not. BASE jumpers are hard pressed to get permission from building and antenna tower owners because they are afraid of their legal liabilities should a jumper get hurt. Because of this, many BASE jumps are done in secret.

There are very few places in the United States where BASE jumping is legal without permission or a permit. Perrine Bridge in Twin Falls, Idaho is one such place. The New River Gorge Bridge in Fayetteville, West Virginia is only legal for BASE jumping once a year – always the third Saturday in October.

All national parks are off limits as well, per the National Park Service. Technically, one could apply for a permit, but the parks department has determined that BASE jumping is not an “appropriate” way to use our nation’s parks.

If in doubt about a BASE jumping location, look to find out if there is specific law prohibiting BASE jumping. In some special cases you may be able to BASE jump on public land until you are asked to stop.

Today’s BASE Jumpers

Once a BASE jumper has successfully jumped from one place in each category (again: building, antenna, span, earth) he is invited to apply for an official BASE number. The first BASE number was awarded in 1981 and over 1,000 have been awarded today.

BASE jumping is considered an extreme sport, though there is no way to judge one jump against another. Most BASE jumpers are happy to be alive at the end of the day. There is a relatively high number of fatalities amongst BASE jumpers which has had a significant impact on preventing the growth of the sport. This has not, however, deterred enthusiasts from continuing to participate.

The Guinness Book of World Records has featured BASE jumping several times as well. In 1984 they added the category for the highest BASE jump. They have not added a category for the lowest BASE jump, as it’s possible to call any low altitude jump a BASE jump, even if it’s so low you don’t need a parachute!

BASE jumping is an exhilarating and exciting sport, providing the adrenaline rush that any extreme sports junkie craves. We, on the other hand, prefer to keep our feet flat on the ground!

Family vacations are always filled with togetherness and fun. We find, however, that a good dose of healthy competition can go a long way as well. Many families find a rousing game of miniature golf to be an incredible way to spend some time, but not just any old golf course will do. We’re happy to share our seven favorite miniature golf courses.

7. Disney’s Winter Summerland – Orlando, Florida

Amusement parks are wonderful, but Disney has so much more to offer than traditional rides and shows. Not far from the Blizzard Beach water park is Disney’s Winter Summerland golf course. There are actually two distinct golf courses contained within the Winter Summerland course, one with a snow theme and one with a sand theme. The themes are fun and refreshing and a game of golf is an excellent way to take a break from the crowded park environment.

6. Par-King Skill Golf – Lincolnshire, IL

The Par-King miniature golf course is located in Lincolnshire, Illinois and is well know for being one of the most unusual golf courses in the country. Once referred to as the Taj Majal of miniature golf, the course started out as an adjunct to a driving range. The owner thought opening a mini golf course would give the rest of the family something to do, and he created a beautiful “golfing garden”.

Today, the miniature golf course houses several unique wooden figures and mechanical objects, including a moving clown and an incredible wooden rollercoaster. It’s a great place to host birthday parties or even a small family reunion. No one will forget a sunny day spent at Par-King.

5. Pirate Island Golf – Avalon, New Jersey

For 18 holes of crazy pirate adventure, head towards Pirate Island Golf in Avalon, New Jersey. The attractions scattered throughout this golf course are incredible, featuring talking pirates, cascading waterfalls, and pirate ships. Your trek across the course will be full of incredible surprises. Pirate Island Golf is an amazing place to visit, especially during the summer months down the Jersey shore. While the original location is in Avalon, you can find sister-courses in both Sea Isle City and Ocean City as well.

4. Putting Edge Fun Center – Pittsburgh, PA

For a truly unique experience, head on over to Putting Edge Fun Center. We have seen the location in Pittsburgh, but there are a few others scattered throughout the United States. Nowhere else will you have the opportunity to play glow in the dark miniature golf! The golf course is decorated in amazing colors that shimmer and glow under the black lights. Hint – if you wear white clothing, the course won’t be the only thing glowing!

3. Dottie’s – Salt Lake City, Utah

Dottie’s miniature golf course opened in 1960 and is one of the oldest surviving courses in the state. Incredibly popular during the 60’s and 70’s, the course originally opened as the Arnold Palmer Mini Golf Course. Of course, ownership changes mean name changes, and the current name reflects that of the long time owner.

The course doesn’t have a ton of high-tech obstacles like the newer ones, but it does have a unique and special flavor – namely nostalgia. Dottie’s is an incredible place for the family to gather for a quiet game of miniature golf, away from the hustle and bustle of the big city.

2. Mountasia – Houston, Texas

Moutasia is more than a miniature golf course, to say the least. The miniature golf course itself features 18 fun and exciting holes that are perfect for golfers of any age. Watch out for the crazy windmill and you might just get that coveted hole in one!

Of course, the folks at Mountasia don’t want you to leave too early. Once you’ve finished your game of golf you can head on over to the batting cages, try out the bumper boats, hit the snack bar, or try a round on the go karts. We guarantee you won’t be bored here.

1. Jolly Roger Amusement Parks – Ocean City, Maryland

Ocean City is a hot destination for many vacationers, so finding an incredible miniature golf course here wasn’t too surprising. One of several Jolly Roger parks, the golf course features both the Treasure Hunt and Jungle Golf courses, each promising adventure like no other. The tropical rain forests, waterfalls, and pirates may be too much for the weak at heart to bear. Are you up for the challenge?

There are literally hundreds of miniature golf courses around the country, each claming to have the best features, greens, and opportunity for adventure. Miniature golf courses are great for all members of the family, ranging from the youngest golfer to the seasoned aficionado. These are some of our absolute favorites, but the real decision is up to you!

Years ago, as our country was forming, settlers moved from place to place not by car, boat, plane, or train – but by covered wagon. The wagons, pulled by mules or stock horses, played an integral part in the formation of our country’s history. You can now experience what life was like in a covered wagon for yourself. Your trip won’t be nearly as long as some of theirs were, but it will be just as authentic and even more fun. Check out some of our favorite covered wagon tours.

The Fall Color Tour by Covered Wagon is only offered on specific days, so you’ll need to call the ski resort for details. The trip is a brief 30-minutes long, but well worth the experience. Your day in the area won’t be wasted, either – there are plenty of walking tours and historic exhibits to explore as well!

Covered wagon tours provide amazing opportunities for families and groups from all over to gain a better understanding of exactly what it was like to travel during some of our country’s most formative years. Whether you’re looking for a day trip or a short vacation, there’s a covered wagon tour waiting for you. Your entire family is bound to have an incredible adventure!
