boardwalkLooking for boardwalks for your vacation ideas? The kid within many of us finds boardwalks to be the ideal mix for children and adults. The sandy beaches, variety of stores, fine restaurants, and video arcades make boardwalks a dream destination for many. In addition, the boardwalk atmosphere allows for inexpensive vacation prices and old-fashioned midway rides that appeal to young and old alike.
Atlantic City Boardwalk
Atlantic City in New Jersey has one of the most popular boardwalks in the eastern portion of the United States. The four-mile stretch of boardwalk is lined with casinos, bars, and restaurants for adults, while the amusement parks and beaches appeal to children. Ice cream and other frozen treats are sold along the Steel Pier section, while history buffs can head to the historical museum on Garden Pier. Video arcades are scattered throughout the area. Entry to the boardwalk is free, but the games, rides, and other activities will cost some money.

Coney Island Boardwalk
New York’s Coney Island boardwalk features a large amusement park, the legendary Nathan’s Coney Island Dog restaurant, many shows, and even a weird sideshow that features Bambi the Mermaid, Insectavora, and Diamond Donny V, a man who can drive a nail into his skull with ease.

Myrtle Beach BoardwalkMyrtle Beach Boardwalk
South Carolina’s Myrtle Beach is home to many inexpensive hotels and motels and a lengthy stretch of boardwalk that faces the Atlantic Ocean coastline. Golfing is a popular attraction in this area, but the Pavilion Amusement Park is a favorite with kids. The Aquarium, Ripley’s Believe it or Not and Imax Theater also draw a huge crowd year after year. If you do not mind bugs, a 9,000 square foot glass atrium that is home to hundreds of butterflies is a favorite with children who delight in having the different, colorful species flutter by their faces as they wander the gardens.

Ocean City Boardwalk
The 100-year-old merry-go-round at Ocean City, Maryland is a main draw to that city’s boardwalk. Whimsical attractions are found throughout this boardwalk area, including a museum spoof of the television show “Baywatch” that is set in the 1800s.

Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk

For 100 years, Santa Cruz, California has been home to what is considered the greatest boardwalk in the world. Admission is always free. Rides like the towering Giant Dipper roller coaster do require day passes that cost $37 per person for one day or $70 for a full season. Discounts are available in the winter months. Other activities at the Santa Cruz boardwalk include arcade games, laser tag arenas, miniature golf, bowling, shopping, restaurants, and then the vast beaches lining Monterey Bay.
