Everyone wishes he or she could fly first class. Visions of extra leg space, sparkling glasses of champagne, and extra blankets and pillows dance through the dreams of every passenger who has ever flown in coach. The first class experience seems out of reach for many, but there are a few things you can do to make your in-flight experience enjoyable, whether you actually make it into a first class seat or not.

  1. Check your airport for a first class lounge. Many airports are providing special lounges that customers can use to relax, have a cup of coffee, or even surf the Internet before flight. Admittance to the lounge might cost a small fee, but you’ll feel as though you’re in first class even before you get on the plane.

  2. Upgrade your plane ticket. Your options are no longer limited to simply first class or coach. The newer, larger planes often offer additional seating sections, which means you may be able to fly in between the two. This will allow you to save on cost and while it’s not first class, you’ll enjoy some of the same amenities you wouldn’t have had if you were stuck in coach.
  3. Are you a vegetarian? Would you mind eating a vegetarian meal on your flight? Vegetarian meals, for some reason, tend to be served before the others, meaning your food will most likely be hot and fresh – not to mention healthy!
  4. Treat yourself as though you’re flying in first class. A little imagination can go a long way. Pack a few goodies in your carry on bag, including a small pillow, travel slippers, a scented face mask, or hand lotion. The people flying in first class get these items for free, but that doesn’t mean you can’t bring your own.

  5. Sit as close to the front of the plane as possible. You’ll be the last person on the plane and the first person off the plane, reducing the amount of time you’ll have to sit idle.
  6. Board Any Time. If you’re older, ill, disabled, or traveling with children you have every right in the world to ask permission to board the plane first. This will give you time to get situated before the plane takes off.
  7. Be nice – plain and simple. If you are not nice to your flight attendant, she will not be nice to you. Your flight will b e much more pleasurable if you’re kind to your flight attendant.
  8. Pack snacks. There is no way of knowing how much food you’ll get on the plane, if any at all. Your flight will be more enjoyable on a full stomach, come prepared.
  9. Try to get a seat near an emergency exit or on the end of an aisle or row. Sitting on the end of a row or sitting in an exit row gives you the added benefit of extra leg room.

  10. Leave your work at home. You’ll be too distracted to get any work done, so carrying your laptop is a waste of time, not to mention a liability in today’s theft-driven society. Just relax - and enjoy your flight!
