10 of the Coolest Dude Ranches in North America

posted in: North America  |  posted by: Jennifer Gregory on September 6, 2009  |  1 Comment

We’ve all seen at least one cowboy movie or cartoon before. And, if you have, you’ve probably spent at least a few minutes dreaming about what it would be like to be a cowboy (or girl).

David Owens listens to his partner sing a cowboy ballad.

Now that you’re a little older, we’re happy to say that it really is possible to make those dreams come true. All you have to do is take a vacation to one of North America’s coolest dude Ranches.

10. Sorrel River Ranch Resort & Spa

Sorrel River Ranch, Utah

In Moab, Utah you’ll find the Sorrel River Ranch Resort & Spa. Once an active homestead, the ranch sits in Utah’s famous Monument Valley – an area that has been featured in several major motion pictures over the past few decades. Visitors to the ranch will enjoy horseback riding and rafting on the Colorado River. Those who prefer a low-key adventure are free to spend the day enjoying treatments in the resort spa instead.

9. The Resort at Paws Up

The options at The Resort at Paws Up in Greenough, Montana are endless. You can choose from a log cabin, a large wilderness suite, or a lavish tent in either the River Camp or Tent City. In addition to standard ranch horseback riding activities, the resort also features hunting, ATV riding, and clay shooting activities.

8. Sundance Resort

UT, The Sundance Ski Resort, Outside of Provo

The Sundance Resort in Sundance, Utah is known for being an eco-friendly community for artists from all walks of life. The resort, envisioned by Robert Redford, features more than 95 mountain homes and cottages decorated with a distinct Western Flair. Visitors enjoy not only horseback riding and afternoons in the spa but trips to the Owl Bar as well – where country singers gather to toil the night away.  Make your reservations far in advance or you won’t be able to get a room in January when the Sundance Film Festival comes to nearby Park City.

7. Siwash Lake Ranch

One of the reasons visitors love the Siwash Lake Ranch in British Columbia is because of its dedication to the use of solar energy. Experienced riders will enjoy the freedom of horseback riding without a wrangler in tow. The ranch welcomes children of all ages between the months of July or August or during any event in which the entire ranch is booked privately.

6. Clayoquot Wilderness Resort

In Tofino on Vancouver Island in British Columbia you’ll stumble upon the beautiful Clayoquot Wilderness Resort. This ranch, featuring 20 large canvas tents for lodging, was designed with true nature lovers in mind. Visitors will enjoy kayaking on the Bedwell River, whale watching, hiking, fishing, and – of course – camping. Don’t worry – you’ll find both internet access and private bathrooms in separate outbuildings near your tent.

5. Lajitas Resort & Spa

The resort features a stunning 19-hole golf course as well.

4. Spring Creek Ranch

3. Vista Verde Ranch

Real Cowboys

The Vista Verde Ranch in Steamboat Springs, Colorado is extra special. Children are welcome during the summer months and the special program for children will keep them busy with wagon rides, movies, and even tepee camping trips. Adults will enjoy riding, rafting, and hiking in between gourmet meals or trips to their cabin hot tubs. As an added bonus, this is one of the few ranches in the United States offering hot air balloon rides.

2. Mountain Sky Ranch

1. Alisal Guest Ranch

Visitors are encouraged to commune with nature, enjoy ranch activities, and mingle with new friends.

North American dude ranches offer some of the most incredible opportunities for a relaxing vacation you’ll find anywhere in the world. Kick back, learn about the cowboy lifestyle, and enjoy the open air. You’ll be glad you visited!

Sorry, but the Spring Creek Ranch in Jackson Hole is about as far removed from the idea of a “ranch” as one can get.

Not to say it isn’t a nice place, but “ranch” it is not! Fancy resort, maybe…
