When we, as human beings, go to sleep at night an entirely different world unfolds. Nocturnal animals wake, stars shoot across the sky, and adventures we can only dream of take place. Those of us who are snoozing are missing out on a ton of fun and excitement. 10. San Juan Island Kayaking – Washington State
In Washington State you’ll find a group called REI Adventures, offering a three-day weekend trip in which guests get the opportunity to kayak around the San Juan Islands. Orca whales and seals are definitely cool but in the evening, when the glowing dinoflagellates come out, you’ll have the opportunity to see the waters around the islands glow and sparkle.
9. Starlit Skiing – Quebec
If you love skiing you won’t want to miss out on the opportunity to ski the slopes of Mount Siante- Anne at night. On the highest nighttime slopes in North America you’ll find more than nine miles of mountainside split amongst 17 distinct trails. Evening trails are open for the entirety of the winter season.
8. Night Safari – Singapore Zoo
The Singapore Zoo is well known for its Night Safari adventures. This beautiful park was actually designed for evening visits when animals are awake and stirring in the most natural environment possible. You’ll see Asian deer, hyenas, Tibetan blue sheep, and over 100 other nocturnal creates – awake and ready to welcome you.
7. Overnight Mountain Biking – Utah
Armed with only a bike light mounted to your handlebars, the folks at Rim Tours will guide you on a three to four hour evening adventure across some of the roughest trails in Moab, Utah. If you’re looking for a real adventure you should visit during October when the 24 Hours of Moab Race takes place.
6. Evening Jungle Hikes – Belize
In the Cayo District of Belize you’ll find the earth-friendly Black Rock Lodge. After dark falls, the lodge’s guides will lead you on a hike in search of some of the area’s nocturnal critters. You’ll follow the Macal River in search of howler monkeys, tapirs, snakes, and dozens of other local wildlife. If you’re lucky you may even catch a glimpse of the elusive Jaguar.
5. Evening Orienteering – Minnesota
Those into sporting and games will enjoy an evening of orienteering in Minnesota. The Minnesota Orienteering Club organizes meets where runners are sent out – alone- into the woods with only a headlamp, compass, and small map. Runners are looking for flags to keep them on course but, of course, they’re all hidden in the dark woods.
4. Northern Lights – Yukon
A trip to see the Northern Lights is a trek everyone should make at least once. Visible from the Yukon Territory of Canada, you’ll find several tour groups willing to guide you on overnight trips to see the astounding aurora borealis from the tiny town of Whitehorse. Hiking and canoeing trips are available as well.
3. Full Moon Parties – Thailand
Every single month you’ll find villages scattered throughout Thailand illuminating themselves for Full Moon Festivals. The best parties are found on the beaches at Koh Phangan, one of the nicest islands in the area, where visitors from around the world gather to celebrate and honor the moon with food, music, and dance.

Exploring Australia’s Grampians National Park after dark is an experience like no other. Modern games involve hundreds of players, many of which find darting around college campuses and city squares after dark in search of hidden flags to be an exciting way to spend the evening.
